I think I might have been tempted for you house as well :-) And I've only seen pictures of it. House prices are so ridiculous now - the house we moved from to here (admitedly a better house than this one, with a much bigger garden, on the outskirts of Edinburgh), changed hands again recently and in 9 years it was sold for three times what they paid us for it. How can salaries possibly keep uo with that? Scary.

TBH joyce, that was my plan too. not a debt fan. however, chris and i couldn't find a cheaper house to agree on, and we both wanted a ig garden - we like to try and grow own fruit and veg, and with work, for me an allotment isn't viable as i'd never be bothered to go there. this severely limited the search! also had to be within 10 miles of wokr etc etc.
the house we would really have ought [at upper limit of budget] would have been a good compromise all round, and I drive past it to work wishing it had stayed on the market [we tried to view it 3 times before it came off] but some things just aren't meant tio be. This house is just so gorgeous that we bought it in full knowledge opf bottomless pit.
unfortunately my work chnaged goalposts, dropped my salary, and it will drop some more next april = more stuffed than planned!!

so yes, we should have just settled our differences, but hoping it all comes out good in the end. After all, if things got desperate we do have options - shcool and chris at work, or private practice for me. neither appealing though

Hm, we made a deliberate choice to do the opposite - to not ever over-extend ourselves for the sake of a house. (and to be honest, we still probably have more house than we *need*). Bob would probably have been encouraged too, but I wouldn't hear of it. But sometimes when I look at gorgeous houses like yours, I do wonder if we made the right choice. We have a very pleasant 4 bedroom detached house, about 30 years old, in a *nice* area, but it's very ordinary and soulless. Though mostly I am fairly content, as I find debt just about the most stressful thing imaginable, and I hate worrying about the amount of money I have in my purse. I don't think I'm particularly profligate, (in fact, even frugal on occasion!) but I do like to be able to spend money without counting every penny.
