to big I think, and the tail not quite right for a newt. Thing is, I’ve only ever seen this thing twice, and have only seen the tail end, not the head. But an Eel, seems the likest thing at the moment

Not been having visits from a heron, by any chance? They are frequently the culprits for disappearing fish.
