Chris, I was really pleasantly surprised at how much easier it was from yours (and you can do it all in daylight ), when you don’t seem *that* much further north than me. It only took about 4 hours or something crazy, and I do like the A68. But if I don’t come that way from here, and if I did it would take me even longer.

About £150 for me + 4 kids with FR. Which is what it costs me in the Bongo – 3 tanks of diesel. And coming home on the Friday there’s a train straight through from Berwick to Reading, which is nice

I don’t mind the drive the Melrose (in as much as i like any longish drive), but it’s pretty easy drive from here, find A1, go north a lot, turn off. But I don’t like the last section at night so much.

Train to Berwick or Edinburgh is ok from here, but put off somewhat by having to then spend an hour on the bus at the other end. Doesn’t look cheaper though £135 with family railcard, lot more than petrol, though on a ‘running costs ‘ basis , probably more even

last year was lovely. I really like the drive to Melrose, too, don’t know what everyone finds so awful about it! Perhaps it is just a serious case of nostalgia on my part, from when we lived up there. Obviously 2006 was odd because I wasn’t there

In 2006 I didn’t really enjoy myself there, hence not going this year, but I’ve got the rose-tinted specs back on now

Have spent the last hour looking at train and bus timetables and think I am going to do it that way. Works out no more expensive.
