I think IIRC (from school girl history, not cos i was there in person!)that the romans’s built the original junction there, to service different bits of Hadrian’s wall. Of course, no self respecting Scot would use the word “Scotch” nowadays to describe something Scottish. (unless of course they were referring to uisge beatha ;-))
