BB Cold Turkey

Told Butterbean tonight that there is no be no more milk from a bottle (or otherwise) if she wakes in the night /early morn. Most nights she wakes up – anytime between about 1 and about 6 potters through (or down if we are still up….) climbs into our bed and has a bottle or two of milk and goes off to sleep again. This isn’t in itself any great problem, I take milk up when I go to bed, it’s not that disturbing (less so than having to take her back to her room) and we have a nice big superking bed :-)

Problem is, she doesn’t need the milk, it’s just a habit/comfort thing. If she doesn’t go back to sleep soon enough, then after a bit  she starts making a fuss, rapidly escalating most times to a supersize BB fuss wanting more milk – requiring trip down stairs etc. It also means she wees for England during the night, esp. if she has extra bottles (she already has a 10 fl oz bottle at bed time. – Extra bottle can mean another 15 fl oz or more during the night) – she’ll never get dry at this rate. So it can all get a bit silly really.

We hoped that she would gradually drop them, but isn’t really showing any desire to do so, so we are going to try cold turkeying from tonight. But I have bad memories of when we did the same thing for her night time breastfeeding – I used to take her off to a room 3 closed doors away from our bedroom, but sometimes she would just scream and scream and scream.

Here’s hoping.

  1. Good luck! We had that situation with P, if I remember rightly. She used to down at least eight ounces during the night and produce soaked nappies. I think we switched to water when she was three. From then on she drank far less, enabling us to drop night-time nappies. Gosh, its amazing what you can remember… We still make sure both kids have water beside their beds. I can’t sleep unless I have water beside me.

  2. In the end it was ok. She did come through (I’ve no idea when), but didn’t make a great fuss. But it did mean from 6 am she wanted to get up because she didn’t have anything else to do.

    So far so good.

  3. We#’re trying to do the same with Josie. Rice milk just doesn’t fill her tummy but she has turned into a very picky eater and so far as we are concerned, that means the milk goes first!

Oddly though, she is often nearly dry at night. Today there is only probably 1 tiny wee in the pull ups and she has gone through nappiless in the recent past.

Only having one in nappies at all now is nice though.

  4. We had a similar problem with M, but with him it was the amount he was drinking at bedtime.
We had to switch to a cup when we went on hols (forgot the bottle) and remarkably he went down to one smallish cup rather than 2 or 3 full bottles without much fuss.

He still hanging onto those nighttime nappies though for dear life, even though he is just about dry. Definitely a psychological thing for him.
