The Apprentice

I think today is hte first task that I would have had dificulty doing. Not the selling per se – as that seemed to be a matter of confidence, and ‘qualifying’ [which seemed eminently reasonable], but selling cars. I know very little about cars. I would have become unstuck with the patter of what the car had, and as for valuing trade ins!

i was very impressed by Ruth’s sales – she just did know how to sell, and does exactly what she says on the tin. Not sure that this makes her the best candidate for Alan Sugar’s apprentice, but would certainly make her my top choice for a car saleswoman! [there were 9 candidates, 20 cars in total sold, and she sold 6 of them - just under 1/3!]

well, not sure why its worth a blogpost! Just becaus I can I expect

  1. Ha, but anyone can look inside a car and see at a glance whether it has air conditioning or not! or a cd player, etc etc. And as for valuing tradeins, i’m quite sure they didn’t do that themselves off the top of their heads – we use a number of different ‘guides’ and they’re all dead easy to use, even i can do it. Of course there are cars that are worth more or less than what the guide says but that’s just a matter of experience … I didn’t see any of them actually look at a p/x to value it in last night’s programme.

Can’t help but wonder how much heavy editing goes on in order to paint the picture they want to, anyway. I was impressed by Ruth’s sales but when they revealed that the other group had sold up more extras then I wondered – surely as a salesperson she should have realised that the high commission was in the extras and sold up more of them?

Anyway, love the programme and it’s fun to dissect it afterwards ;)

  2. yeah i enjoyed that one, because selling is what i can do. I looked at car jobs a few times before i had children but never felt like i would be able to summon up enthusiasm for the product.

That said, i really don’t believe they could have got that proficient in one day, and if it is a task a week, what do they do the rest of the week? I bet they got a good bit of grooming for that job surely? Even as a good saleswoman, i wouldn’t have been able to walk in and do that job, that paperwork and that amount of patter on the first day.

I used to love the commission we got on extras though, it made all the difference to the pay. They were idiots not to spot it.
