musical mondays – grieg

holberg suite. i love this. i always think it sounds ‘very english’. i have a thing for all strings! here is some more.

arran – midges, wind and rain

we went on a camping holiday last week to arran. we booked a lovely campsite in lochranza, ferry crossings etc and went with good spirit, despite the weather forecast.

we actually did have a lot of fun, but had to work hard for it! we pitched the tent in rain – well, it rained as soon as the outer was up and was very ratty making! it was late when we got their after a long day of travelling. the night was considerably windy, but the tent was rock solid. [tho i did stay awake to make sure!] the next day the weather was ‘variable’ so we went shopping for staples, played a bit on the beach, and me and the girls played mini golf. it then soaked it down! BB hated midges, and SB and i got eaten alive. oh, and the pressurising bit on the stove stopped working, so we had to swap to emergency gas cannisters! the night was again incredibly blustery, but i slept.
the following day [tues] was pretty much solid rain to start with, so we played games in the tent to start with, and then did some craft kits – must add craft kits to camping list! – and got the girls jollied along [though mummy not so impressed!] and then decided to drive around the coast and stop whenever and wherever it wasn’t torrential rain. luckilly there was a glimmer of improvement, so SB and i played on the beach and found stones. it started to tip it down, but we were well wrapped up. back to the car for hot choc, and then drove some more to find a cafe for lunch. suitably restored and in a light drizzle only, we went for a walk to kings caves. we enjoyed the walk so much and did lots of investigating that we never actually got to said cave [which is a shame], but we were all happy. the midges descended – 6 o clockbeing midge o clock and we ran back to the car and had a restaurant meal to inject further cheer into the day.

wed was glorious and sunny – hooray! we cycled to a nearbye castle to explore, spent time playing on the beach and then cycled back for lunch. had we cycled a bit further we would have found a cafe, never mind! we then drove to a lovely pebble beach, where there were lots of rockpools and crystal clear water, and we saw lots of wildlife. unfortunately when we were investigating anemones, BB was investigating the flotation of crocs, so there was a mad dash to save one from drifting to kintyre! this was def A Good Day! i didn’t sleep well from this moment onwards as taking max piriton and anti itch creams for the total body rash of bites! SB tried to swallow a tablet as we hadn’t got the syrup, but she hasn’t developed the technique yet. oh, and we think we might have seen an eagle!
thurs another day of variable weather – mostly drizzle, some heavy and some just midge. we did some art and craft in the tent and then went to the heritage museum. this was rather fab, and we actually spent the whole day there. it had a nice cafe, and also a weaving and spinning workshop. BB was less enthusiastic, but fell asleep for most of the afternoon. SB keen for chris to make her a weaving frame to do more, as she quickly got into it. she also wants a spinning wheel for christmas – not quite so sure about that one, but will perhaps see about a drop spindle if she fancies it instead!

fri , not quite so variable! in fact it was quite sunny in parts!! so we went to a beach with sand – actually it was quite nippy at this point, but both girls got stuck right into making sandcastles and were happy. we moved onto a cafe for lunch and then we had decided that we really really wanted to see the stone circles, so did a walk to those. weather stayed fine, and girls had a good walk. lots of conversations about this that and everything and lots of smiling. fantastic! SB singing her ‘show’ songs continually, so even BB and I know most of the words now.

sat was time to go. we packed up everything but the shell whilst it rained, and the girls were helpful and lovely. we treated ourselves to lunch at the cafe, hoping the rain would ease, but instead it turned from moderate drizzle to really rather wetting! chris, me and SB were soaked. by the end- after we had convinced sb that although she was v helpful, we didn’t want to her to be wet and miserable,  chris and i were in a state of giggles at how awful it was, and the fact that our reactalite glasses were convinced it was sunny – so we were wet and looking at things in extra gloom!

so we went for retail therapy, and visited the cheesery – yummy peppercorn cheese amongst others, and arran aromatics – various rellies presents bought! oh, and another cafe for cake! a final beach visit and then the ferry
home was in stages, we spent a night at the premier inn in carlisle – and were inpressed with it and the service there. and we stopped off sunday lunch at jax and co, for something to eat and a good natter.

overall impression – regret for the holiday we didn’t get. arran was lovely, we had identified walks and cycles to do, but the weather was against it. die hards might have still gone ahead, but lets face it, SB and BB would have been really miserable, and we would have been moved from borderline miserable to outright!! so we did crafts and made of it what we could. SB never wants to return to scotland, as she and i still v midgy.

there and back again – SOTP

firstly thanks to the SOTP family for a lovely weekend at their house. good friends, good food and happy children. we took loads of photos, and will no doubt flickr them. thanks also for giving us a room in the house. although i am sure our tent would have been fine [it proved itself later in the week] i think to have put tents up and down in adverse conditions more than once would have made the week seem stressful! sorry for those whose tents came down in the night though…

Had a lovely time chatting, and meeting up with the wellyboots family for the first time, as well as much loved old friends. SB and BB had great fun as well. glad to see that SB happy with her friends and reasonably confident after a few major wobbles since her accident. there were loads of games going on, and the rainy weather didn’t seem to hold things back. BB was charming and adorable nearly all the time! i loved her attachment to her capri sun DS. i also like the video of her grape eating on flickr. she repeated the trick more wildy several times whilst we were camping!

talked books – always a good subject, and came away with some to read. always good! some interesting talks on new atheism. which to me seems currently to be a particularly rude and brattish way of thinking – i think i perhaps am not  keen supporter of anything new [think new labour!] if this is going to be the face of atheism, i will be an agnostic [preferably of the old variety!!] you can’t do much exciting with people hedging their bets.

we decamped [well, ok not quite] as we had a schedule to keep on the sunday and went to catch the ferry to Arran. i am considering here what exactly to say about the holiday. i might facebook [as tim says its my go on scrabulous] and come back to post again.

musical monday – sibelius karelia suite

i enjoy a lot of sibelius’s music, and was debating what to start with. but i have decided on the jollity of the opening of the karelia suite. hope you like it too. thinking as i hear it of the friends i had in the french horn section!

packing

i am really crap at packing. have at least done the baking for going oop north [and house smelling rather lovely at the moment ]. have a pasta bake in the freezer as well to take, so at least there ready. chris has bought a bike rack so that we can take the bikes and the bike trailer to scotland. woohoo!! i hope its not too hilly, being outcycled by a seven year old will be a bit much! [yes, I know scotland is marginally hillier than east anglia!]. i should pack really.

looking forward to seeing friends at the weekend.

a jolly houseful and swirly biscuits

SB, BB, M and E have continued to enjoy playing together and it has been lovely to have them. i was concerned about how well E would settle, but it really has been no problem at all. would be happy to do again – perhaps at a time when i was at home more.

today we were joined by the deependers and so we had a group of daleks racing around as M inducted them into the subtleties of the dalek homeworld etc. lots of swinging and sliding and generally having fun. BB managed to collapse the table in the dining room, but katy came up with a plan that antiques roadshow wouldn’t struggle hugely with. now one of the segments has a huge gash in it, there isn’t so much to be worried about anyway.

katy also brought with her some biscuit dough that L had found arecipe for and was v keen to make, so we made swirly biscuits, which was much enjoyed and stained everyones hands with food colouring. they tasted good too.

my sister arrived earlier than expected and has now been happily reuinited with children [who aare now all asleep] i must have an early night as completely shattered. we have started to think about what to take to yorkshire, and go aargh baking!! and also look at our camping stuff and see what we can cut back on.

2 blogs in my head

and i don’t think i am ever going to do them!! one is about the joys of living in a sea of arable land, watching the seasons change and feeling the rhythms, and the other one is all about watching my family seasons change, BB is no longer a baby, though there is still a scrap of toddler about her, BB is turning into her next stage girl, and i guess i am hurtling towards menopause. see, all seasonal.

in other time frames, yesterday all the kids played nicely together. today chris took them to a raptor centre, which they all enjoyed whilst i was at work

family weekend

i decided, and chris agreed, that it would be nice to celebrate having family this weekend, so we invited 30+ family members to our house for a party. some of you might have seen the flickr! both sets of parents decided we weren’t going to manage to pull the house in order on our own, so v kindly helped with some tidying. chris’s mum on mon and tues, and my parents from wed.

ooh, that reminds me. SB did manage to stick out the week at musical theatre, and i am v proud of her. she is also proud of herself, so a bit of a result. the video mostly shows her being worried, but about 30% enjoyment too, so thats good. having my mum cheer her on in the audience was good too. she then very happily reprised all the music for us with actions, said she would do it again, but it would be nice to go with a friend another time. we might go for the sports programme elsewhere another time.

anyway, a spruce and tidy to the house and garden, little nanny and my sister and family arrived on the friday. final things done and sat morning it just poured it down! how totally miserable. anyway loads of family arriving, and though i had catered loads, they all brought loads so dining table groaning! we had a fab time. i was sad my dad’s brother, wife, sons and any grandchildren didn’t make it at the last minute, but pretty much full turnout to celebrate the joy of having family.

it also put a big smile on my sisters face, as everyone was lovely to her, complementing her on growing back hair etc etc. she needed a bit of an up! chris and i were a bit bushed at the end, but felt it had all gone really smoothly, and had been great fun for all. we might even do it again in 2 years time! the sun came out in the afternoon, which reallly helped.

sunday and most of the visitors of yesterday were day visitors, and my sister and husband went home on the sunday, leaving us their 2 children. lots of games playing and general fun. my parents and little nanny went home this morning [which seems a long time ago] lots of happy playing by all the children today, a bit of a childrenmoon! makes 4 seem easier than 2!!

musical mondays – blush

the thing with this is that this series got me through redundancy process at work. and hearing this theme still gives me that same sensation of being able to breathe again.

so here it is, battlestar galactica, a theme that i will always be thankful for though i don’t rank it in the music to love pantheon in quite the same way!

floods!

chris went to pick SB up from a drama holiday thing she did the first session of [she was less sure than i thought she would be] and also accidentally left the hosepipe filling up the paddling pool…

SB has had fun reading a book about the period table and also about the celts. BB has been entertained by nana and grandad.
