Pocket Money

Nothing to report really, Beans at nursery, I had some work, Ballet lesson, poor Helen absolutley knackered on return from work and went to bed with SB at about 8pm.

I was throwing BB around a bit before bed , which as ever she enjoyed, but SB felt she was missing out, she insisted I ‘mess her about’. Which is what she calls it. Of course she is getting a bit big for it really , but we managed a bit. after I’d put her to bed she came down complaing and crying that the duvet was all wrong…….
Anyway, decided really that it’s time for SB to have some pocket, seeing as she is now grasping the concept of money really, and understands that differen coins etc. have different value – she did well at counting out the 5ps, 2ps and 1ps to buy 35 p of sweets the other day.

so home much do you reckon? I imagine it would be spent on some sweets, the odd magazine, and odd bits of tat. I’d be interested to see how she repsonds to the idea of saving up to get something.

  1. Whatever Joe gets he spends, he can’t seem to grasp the idea of saving. Then again what we give him isn’t enough to save, iyswim, it would take years to save for anything decent!

At the moment we’re giving him 50p a week, if he’s done well at violin practice, and it gets given on swimming lesson days so that he can spend it in the vending machine (overpriced, but there’s a thrill about the machine!) which seems to be a huge treat.

The girls have the same random bits of money for random things, if I get round to bank accounts for them sometime soon I guess we will get a bit more organised about it. Maybe!

  2. I give mine quite a lot, but I don’t buy them bits and pieces any more. So Ernest gets a tenner a month, and has done for perhaps a year now. He mostly spends it on sweets from the corner shop once or twice a week, perhaps a comic once or twice a month, taken out if we go somewhere so he can spend it, and then the rest gets saved until I point out that he has enough to get a computer/xbox/ds game and he buys one (I don’t buy him games unless I want to!). He and Gwenny aren’t spend-for-the-sake-of-it kind of kids, but Violet is :)

  3. Fran gets ?3 a week, Maddy gets ?2 a week. Amelie doesn’t get anything, but probably will from when she is ?4. Ours was initially based on them doing basic jobs like room tidying and normals but now that they just do those things, i just give it to them.

It has changed lots of things, not least that they’ve stopped begging for gift shop stuff. One purchase of those ?1 toys in a ball from Sainsbury’s was enough for them to see how pointless they were too!

Fran saves quite well but Maddy just has to be rid of it – at the moment i keep a record of it for them in a pocket book because it burns slightly less of a hole in her pocket that way.

  4. I was thinking of about 50p. Her magazines are usually monthly, and perhaps with the bonus money she receives every so often [from grandparents] and a good money box that would probably do.

  5. From when she is 4, not ?4!

I think i’ll give her 50p, then maybe ?1 when she is 5. I don’t expect my lot to buy everything, just most incidentals now, but it has given them a feel for the value of money for sure.

  6. Hannah gets ?15 per month, just gone up from ?12 in the last couple of weeks. When she was sb’s age, she had ?8-?10 per month. I pay it into her bank account by direct debit, so it concentrates the mind wonderfully about whether or not she will withdraw it. She has a cash point card, or she can go into the bank for it. The minimum she can withdraw is ?10 at the machine, or ?5 in the bank. She tends to like to have about a fiver in her purse, I’ve noticed. She isn’t really spend for the sake of it, and I don’t buy her stuff now, unless *I* want too. Occasionally she will invite me out for lunch off her money :-), and she’s very good at letting it mount up if she wants something special. Her allowance is unconditional, but she can earn some extra if she does tasks around the house or garden that I deem more than I would reasonably expect ;-)

  7. btw, did you say you had some work? How was it?

  8. Ok, it was work. School was ok.

  9. Not sure we ahve resolved this yet. H is keen on 50p I’m in favout of more.

  10. TBH Chris, I don’t actually think we have more – especially this month
