So which new camera?

Having finally got around to sorting out the insurance claim for the stolen bag, just awaiting the arrival from Jessops of the vouchers to get a replacement. The amount we got was fairly generous I guess, but we do have to spend them in the Jessops shop, so can’t go hunting bargins on the net. But we will easily be able to replace what we had with something  bit better so I guess that’s what matters.

I liked the A80, some am tending towards Canon again. At the moment I like the look of the Canon 710IS . In particular the 6xzoom (35 – 210mm 35mm camera equivalent) and the optical image stabiliser, which seems to work pretty well from what I can see. Both of which would help things along for the sorts of things we take photos of. The OIS ought to make taking photos sans flash indoors in marginal light a bit easier. 7MP is possibly verging on the side of too many really – you increase the risk of noise in the image as you squeeze more and more pixels onto the same size image sensor. but Canon seem to have got away with it (no worse than similar cameras anyway). – There is 10 MP camera further up the range, I thought the camera makers had given  up on the megapixel race  but obviously not.

One or two things missing from what the A80 had that I liked, but nothing major.

  1. Couldn’t decide which of you wrote this, but have ended up deciding Chris due to inclusion of capitals!

  2. You thought Helen would be wittering on about sensor size and image noise? :-)

It does say who posted it. But only on the main blog page i’ve noticed, when you view an individual post it doesn’t. I’m sure it used to.

  3. That looks pretty darn good. Cheaper from Amazon (i.e. from pixmania.co.uk). :-)

Imaging Resource seem to think it is a winner.

  4. What is this nasty rumour that I have an Aversion to Capitals them????????? [sp corrected!]

  5. Not only capitals, but correct spellings too ;-)

  6. (And I had to edit that comment for typos about 11 times, lol!)

  7. Chris can you use their vouchers with their internet price match scheme worth finding out. Jessops internet arm sell the IS710 for ?195 (plus postage). Jessops scheme will see you it for that (minus 10 per cent of the difference) so long as in stock at both. Just take a print out along with a phone number they can ring to check stock on.

Might be useful. Recommended something very similar to the IS710 (possibly the IS700) to Kirsty and James this week also suggested looking at the lumix range.

  8. Tim – prices elsewhere are irrelevant really since we have to use the vouchers in Jessops shops.

Chris – no we can’t use them with price matching, or discount offers etc. We have to buy at the normal shop selling price. Which is fair enough really I guess since the voucher value is arrived at using the normal selling price of the products. They based it on the A630 as a replacement – and used the value of the normal selling price of ?268.99 – on jessops.com for 219 and I could probably get it for ?185 from the web. ditto Memory cards – they’ve costed it at ?75 for 3×256 MB Sandisk SD cards when you can buy a 1GB card for under ?20 elsewhere. so seings and roundabout really.

Basically we have ?368 of vouchers to replace the camera, cards and bag from Jessops,.

I’m wondering if high speed SD cards are worth it for this camera – a couple of the reviews I read have implied it. but it seems hard to find hard figures on it.
