Spotted in a comment on another blog earlier, but I notice it popping up here and there more often. What I mean of course is the:
I heart XXXX
kind of thing.
Now, using the heart symbol as shorthand to mean ‘love’, is fair enough. But then to write ‘heart’ instead of the symbol in it’s place, when you could just have written ‘love’.
Sorry, that’s plain silly.

I think you are absolutely right on this, utterly stupid to use an abbreviation which is longer than the original.
I ♥ proper English.

Whenever I’ve read it I’ve assumed it meant something less than ‘love’ and was used to avoid cheapening that word.

Is your friend here.
As for avoiding cheapening the word ‘love’ well seeing as it’s been used to refer to minor things for a long time, seems a bit late to worry about that now.
It’s obviously just done by young whippersnappers to annoy old fogeys like me
Joanna, yup, I’m practicing hard
