John Muir Award

I’ve beenĀ  member of the John Muir Trust for years now.
They run something called the John Muir Award which is an environmental award scheme aimed at encouraging the discovery and conservation of wild places. Though primarily aimed at organised groups, it is open to individuals, families and small informal groups as well.
I’m pondering trying to organise a group of home edders to do it, it sounds like it could be interesting and fun.

  1. we were supposed to do that with Delamere club the other year but they eventually decided that only the over 8s had done enough to qualify (grrrr) I did look into it then and wondered about doing it as a family. I think it would be a really good thing to do.

  2. It does sound fun and worthwhile. Could we have a John Muir Award camp somewhere? Or does it have to be done over a period of time?

  3. AFAICS, skimming through the information handbook there doesn’t seem to be any mention of a minimum or maximum time limit for completion. Just that you have to complete in total, the minimum amount time for award activities – which is 4 days for the Introductory level.

What attracts me is the openess of the award to different approaches, as long as they address the 4 broad criteria of the award.

I’m just tossing afew ideas around in my head at the moment

  4. There’s a new campsite near Delamere….. lovely forest, sure we could find something worthwhile to do!

  5. We would be keen. will try and read all the info you linked to about it.

  6. For those interested there are also newsletters of the award programme

  7. Please get in touch with me and we can talk about getting some John Muir Award activity started.
I have been monitoring activity done previously with Kate Wood and Stella Spratley. Thanks!
