Advice wanted please

SB has admitted that the thing she REALLY wanted for Xmas was inline skates. they had been one of the many things mentioned, but not in a big way, and she is very happy with all her presents. For her birthday we are getting her a bike, but she wanted to see if other rellies would share the purchase of inline skates as they seem to be fairly expensive. We have had the discussion on where exactly would she use them…
SO… Have any of you got inline skates, or know of anyone that has that has an opinion on them?

I was looking at this shop and thinking perhaps the bronx adjustable ones looked comfortableish and adjustable etc etc? hmm, these comet ones perhaps also OK?
Any advice greatfully received

  1. Matt says just to make sure whatever you buy has proper ankle support, so those ones on that site look fine. He also said make sure you have helmet and pads. For the kind of up and down the street skating she will probably be doing you won’t need anything any better/more expensive, but you shouldn’t go any cheaper than that, as the wheels then don’t turn properly and make them more dangerous and harder to use. He used to run a skate shop selling them! Shame her feet are so small, he has one new pair of adjustable in-lines at his still, but in a bigger size.

  2. Hannah got inline skates two Xmases ago, and I would say she’s had good use out of them. I do insist she wears her cycle helmet, but she has taken her chance with the other safety gear. She uses them mainly on the sea front. I do think you need a fairly long flat run initially. She also has heelys which she saved for and bought herself, and I find them highly irritating! She has adjustable ones, and the adjustability part worked well, though she has now outgrown their maximum. I think they are fun, and just wish I had a pair!

  3. Thanks Joyce! I was going to specifically come to your blog and ask the question, as I was sure H had some. I would love a sea front to use them on!

  4. why am I being moderated? :(

  5. she has a bike helmet, which I thought would do, but will get pads as she is rather accident prone!

  6. SB is reading this over my shoulder as she is quite keen to see what people think would be the best. [If she had been this keen before christmas it would have been useful!!] she is now commenting on my use of exclamatio marks!!!!!!

  7. I bought Charlie some for Christmas this year and he loves them. His balance isn’t brilliant and I thought he would really struggle with them but he got the hang of it quite well although he does fall over a bit. I also got the knee and elbow and wrist pads too. He got the adjustable boot style ones from Argos, can’t remember the make – might have been SK8 or something.

  8. thanks Joanna and Claire. have the children all learned by trial and error then? I have no balance, so have no insight with skating!!

  9. Hannah had had a couple of ice skating lessons, and I think that made all the difference. If they get into the habit of the sticking-out bum stance, or getting dragged along, then I do think it’s hard for them to progress from that. But that may just be me – Bob is a stickler for “good form” in all things sporty!

  10. Argh can’t believe those Rocers are designated ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ ARGH ARGH ARGH.

The thing about the back break I think is that most people tend to stop by turning one foot to the side, kinda dragging it on the ground to slow down, not using the break at all. Can’t comment on if you need it or not really though, and Matt isn’t here now to ask again.

The other thing to do is to kinda do a drive by on a skate park! I think there is one in Hunstanton…..to have a look I mean.

  11. Jade learned firstly by trial and error, and then a quick lesson on technique from DH, and voila!

  12. yeah Em it is rather aarrgh about the boy and girl. SB particularly doesn’t want pink and girly, but a pink streak is acceptable [her fav colour orange at the mo].
you know em, no idea when we could get to hunstanton – or anywhere this mnth – must answer emails!!
