A bit of botox… and a new carpet.

Helen thinks that Butterbean will need some Botox becuase of the amazing furrows on her brow that she has when she frowns – or starts to cry. She took her to see a friend Carmel, who had a another baby a few weeks ago – gave us a present for ~Butterbean and a small pressie for Stringbean – real girly stuff – sparkly bangles and some kiddies sparkly body gel, lipstick stuff etc. – so she loved it, especially as we lost the bit of freebie stuff we got off the front of magazine. Though then made a fuss as she had lipstick on when she wanted to eat her dinner – ‘well go and wipe it off then….’ – fuss – fuss.

Stringbean was at nursery today, when I went to pick her up she didn’t want to come home – she want to carry on playing ‘camping’ or whatever it was they were all doing in the corner. Glad to know that home is such a welcoming place.

Got the new hall and landing carpet today so said goodbye to the last of the stuff that was here when we moved in in 1997 – makes such difference… surprise , surprise. Stringbean has bee looking forward to a carpet on the stairs, when she saw it she was so pleased ‘ Oh it goes upstairs as well!” After dinner she had a Kiwifruit, she helped peel and slice it she is getting worringly good at times a using a sharp knife (with a bit of help and supervision) – but she does know how to hold it had to cut safely with it as we’ve always encouraged her to do it and respect them, rathee than hide them away

New baby, new bike

We have got Stringbean a new bike – an early xmas present really, – we have told her it is a present from her sister. The bike is lovely – it does have the essential Bean accessory of a dolly seat of course. But even though she always said that she wanted a pink and purple bike, sometimes we fell we have to fight against the pink obsession, so we got one in yellow and red – it was according to her ‘ just what she wanted’. She was really excited to get it, it was a great moment.

Stringbean on her new bike

She has just had trikes until now, so not sure about riding a bike – we were going to go up to Golden Acre Park so she could ride it aroiund there somewhere flat – since she’s done the circuit of the lake on her trike. Sadly it started to rain as soon as we gave her the bike – so we played on the drive for a bit, but she’s not to confident with the brakes yet – I’ll try taking her out with it later in the week.

So Helen and Stringbean did some Hama beading – we were going to have a go at some of Merry’s xmas patterns . I printed them off but that was about it. Before bed, she developed her DIY skills by helping me screw down loose and creaking floorboards, and helping me saw up a new board to fit. Beware small girls weilding large saws :-)

One pink shoe…….

Going out this afternoon, Stringbean wanted to put on her Jelly Shoes, couldn’t find both (I think one is in the car) so she decided to wear two odd shoes. Of course, normal parental response can be’ Well that’s a bit silly wearing odd shoes, wear something else’ , but bites tongue, if you can’t happily wear odd shoes when as she says you are ’3 to 4′ (she got it from her clothes size labels…) then when can you…

Elinor's Odd Shoes

Nanny and Grandad Johnson went back home today, so we will have a bit of ‘ just us’ time before we get a visit from Nanna and Grandad French to see their new Grandaughter. After they went home we had a bit of marathon maths session with Stringbean – though she still tends to call the books ‘Match and sort’ as the first one she had was about matching up and sorting things. We ahven’t done anything much like this for a while really, so it was good to do something for a change.

She used one of the Singapore Maths“> ‘Maths Pals ‘ books. We pretty much just let here choose whatever bit she fancies, using the ‘I’ve forgot what they are called’ blocks we did a bit of simple counting, then some adding using the blocks, while also talking about how additions are written on the page etc. Then we did some number grouping – numbers less than 5, more than 5 , more than 10 etc. She spotted that 5 was in the middle of both ‘less than ‘ and ‘more than’ groups, which I thought was pretty clever, she also seemed to spot that any number with a ’1 and something’ was bigger than 10, since I don’t think she can read the ‘teens’ yet very much, even though she can count them. After I went to fit up some new lights in the hall and landing, Stringbean and mummy continued with stuff on ‘balancing’ numbers etc. and more.

Sorting numbers

On the topic of numbers, she’s made a bit of a breakthrough on spotting the repeating patterns as you go up though the ‘tens’, she’d been stuck at about 20 for a while, but yesterday counted by herself up to 35 (or 37) :-)

Butterbean is oblivious to all this of course, but is feeding away like there is no tommorrow :-) She even seems to be smiling occasionaly, though I assume it’s just one of her faces at the moment, rather than in response to something. Cute though.

A belly button!

Problem writing this is, that I forget things that could go in by the time I write.

Last night, while Stringbean was helping me give Butterbean a bath the end of the cord dropped off – String was really excited and went down stairs to tell everyone that she had a belly button now. So it does look rather nicer now :-)

Muffins , yum yum :-)

Ok this was really yesterday, given the time of posting…

Me and Grandad Johnson, were outside most of the day (finished in the dark) fixing up cladding on the extension, and tarting up the carport – fiddly work some of it but it looks good.

So didn’t see that much of The Beans – mostly through the window. Elinor (with a bit of help from mummy)made Chocolate and Bannas muffins – yummy :-) She was very cute bringing me and Grandad some out – ‘You can have a muffin has you have been working hard’ Our next door neighbour Molly had also made us a cake – also yummy. So all in all a good day for cakes.

Midwife came round again – had a trainee or something with her. Obvioulsy felt the need to find something to justify the visit as apparently Butterbean had slighty red armpits – and maybe we weren’t washing her properly – Oh please! – We all peered at her armpits (she enjoyed that…..) and they all looked fine to us.

Butterbean has now lost her ‘squashed new baby ‘ look and developing more a cute baby look. So I’ll try putting up a piccy her of here.

Bye Bye Klingon

Grandad Johnson has been helping us do up bits of the house before we sell it, today apinting porch and front bay – why does the tin run out just at the time that it means by the time you gone and bought another one, it’s too late to finish the job? Will be nice when this house is sold.

Butterbean is gradually getting her ‘proper’ face and she goes a bit
less red now when she cries than she used to. Still all over the lace at
night though, esp. in the early morning. I was up at 6 am this morning
with her, since she was just endlessly fussing. She is feeding enough as
it is, without hassling Mum about it when she isn’t…. She seems fine
in the daytime, it’s just at night after a feed she doesn’t seem to
always settle down again.

Stringbean is well, Stringbean. Nursery day today, there can be so much
fussing at the moment about which clothes to wear, I’ve started us
getting them out the night before to speed up the morning getting
dressed routine. Got a little ‘profile ‘ back from them today – didn’t
really say anything we didn’t know – but did comment on her good Maths
ability which is something we have noticed. Haven’t done much on that
recently – maybe get some bit’s out soon and do it – balancing (as in an
old pair of scales) is something she seems interested in quite often at
the moment

She did do a very green picture, with her name written very well on it –
she seems to have quite suddenly developed her writing skills.

Green picture and writing

Day 2 – urrgggh!

New baby – day 2 – she is lovely, gradually losing her squashed birth face, when she was born she looked a bit like a Klingon or possibly a Schnauzer in Helen’s opnion – she had such a furrowed brow- when she cries she turns an amazing red colour – almost all over, not just her face, but legs etc. as well.

Had a dreadful night with her though – she is getting the idea of feeding, but Helen isn’t producing much milk yet, so leaves her a bit unsettled Whatever, the reason she didn’t settle. Eventually at about 4-5 am I got up with her just to give Helen a chance of a few hours rest as she was just fussing with her all the time, and just crying with me. Stringbean was a pain in those first 6-8 weeks, I hope this doesn’t mean Butterbean will be as well. I will have to try and avoid reading how well Josie is doing at night over on

New baby, new blog

Well, the arrival of Alys aka Butterbean, our new daugter, seems like as good time to start as any. She eventually arrived:

Alys looking cute

2 weeks late, Helen was induced so no homebirth :-( – but did the home from home unit, with a nice big bath/pool, labour progressed so quickly I only just got back in time (born about 20 minutes after I got there, much to our surprise). Anyway, she is gorgeous :-) Home quickly as we could – born 00.22 a.m., home by about 10.00 a.m

So she joins our first daughter Elinor – aka Stringbean, as we stagger from one life event to another…..

Stringbean has been very excited about the baby for ages – she used to talk to it through mum’s belly button. She truly is her mothers daughter – pretty much the first thing she said when we brough Butterbean home was ‘can I take a photo’ :-) – do we take the odd photo of her I wonder…..?

Birth Story

Thought I had better do this before I forget.
Friday 19th of Nov I was getting v fed up, as 14 days over. at the hospital, an internal suggested nothing much happening [and I had had 2 stretch and sweeps before]. The scan shew that my baby was about 9lb weight, a good healthy heartbeat, and plenty of water. however, baby lying back toback [OP]. Although the consultant was quite happy for me to have a homebirth still, the midwife was v against it. Bearing in mind ELinor was also OP, only 8lb 1, and I had a 4.5 hour second stage, I decided to get it done with, be induced, and have an ultra early discharge.
When I went in that evening, I was having some contractions [but what was new, as I'd had them on and off for 3 weeks], and I was about 2 cm. She wasn’t sure whether to still give me the prostin, or wait till the morning to break my waters, when she asked me what I wanted, I went for the prostin. Like with Elinor, I started contracting pretty much straight away. It was about 8 o clock, but they were a bit erratic. I told chris to go home, have something to eat, and i would prob be in good enough labour for him to come back in at 11 ish.
By 10 o clock, I thought it was about time for a pain killer, as contracting every 3 mins, good and strong. the midwife examined me – 3cm, and gave me some co-codamol. An hour later though, I was contracting almost without a break, and v strong, so I said that I felt things were moving on. Looking at me she agreed, and rang labour ward. I texted chris to say things were thick and fast, time to think about coming in.
I had to walk down the steps to labour ward as the lift was still out of order – that is an acheivement when contracting non-stop! Esther [the midwife from the ward] stayed with me, and snuck me into the home from home unit. She knew I had wanted a home birth, so said she would fill the pool for me, even though not really supposed to for inductions. I guess being a consultant has some perks! A CTG shew a very happy heartbeat, and I was 5 cm. those pools take for ever to run. By 11.40 – with still no Chris, I started feeling that I was losing it. the contractions were non stop, the pains had shifted, so I thought the baby had prob turned to OA position, and I felt I needed ‘something’ Luckilly bath nearly ready, so jumped in. What a relief! Chris arrived soon after and almost immediately I wanted to push. This came as rather a shock, as although looking back I was almost certainly in transition when I got that losing it feeling, It had only been just over 30 mins ago I was 5cm. I knelt up in the bath, my waters went, and I felt the need to push despertely. Unfortunately there was meconium in the liquor, so the midwives had to persuade me to get out of the pool. I was all in a dither, and it took about another 10 mns for me to work out how to do that. Once out I pushed twice in a semi-kneeling position, supporting myself on the pool edge, and Alys was born. She was born at 00.22 20/11/04. Cried straight away, and weighed 9lb 1 oz. I did need stitches as had a second degree tear, but they were done under local with no probs.
She fed easily, and chris eventually went home at about 4am. He came back at 9 to take me home. All in all, I was really pleased with my birth. It would have been nice to be at home, but the midwives were lovely and supportive, and I did at least get a birth of my dreams, if not the location!
