Musical mondays – handel

sorry, I am on a bit of a string roll! i just find this particular musical style to be particularly relaxing. i love it!! must meet up with em to release my baroque soul!! anyway, here are some alternatives!!

vacance en france

we had a fantastic camping holiday in france! we had sun, we had calm skies, we had no midges, we had wine, scenery, cheese and just a great time. reminded me what camping should be about! the campsite was lovely, nicely kept, clean toilets, and a lovely pool. it had wifi, but we didn’t take laptops.

our crossing not to damaged by the channel tunnel fire, as we had booked ferries, gone down the night before to stay in a premier in for an early start – i really did need to have a relaxing holiday, as various work based events had me at breaking point by friday. [much chilled now!]. calais is really a much superior port to dover. a breeze to pass through, and those lovely french roads without carparking obligatory! it has been quite a while since i have been in rural france, and i was desolated to find that the traditional french jalopy seems to have finally demised in the interim – you know the one! tiny and seeming to run on thin air, held together with a wing and a prayer!

shopped at leclerc, tent up and dinner done. ahh, relaxxxxxx.

next day was a lazyday, pootling around, doing some crafty kits, swimming in the pool etc etc. we went to jumieges abbey the following day and spent quite a while there, as loads of ground to run around in as well, and girls loved it. poor bb had a major hurt on the way there, and my favourite trousers were liberally splashed in her blood. luckilly her knee didn’t need the steri strips. both girls rather nicely said their pleases and thankyous in french, and even asked for an icecream in french – so i was v pleased!!

fancying a trip to the coast, we went to etretat – deviating to a leclerc on the way to buy a few essentials and taking forever. blustery day, and the girls didn’t get changed into sunsuits etc, as weren’t going to get wet. despite me promising them that they would, they were adamant, so they got entirely and utterly soaked, and wore the sunsuits afterwards to go home in! we amassed a huge pebble collection  with competetive acquisition between the 2 of them.

[btw, bb still up, and blogging v difficult whilst being used as a climbing frame]

the next lovely day trip was to chateau gaillard at les andeleys. i say day trip but we are being quite french, and leaving at late morning, arriving in time for lunch picnic! lots of book reading, crafts, playing in park and cycling going on before we adults actually up enough to go out. i slept badly so did something to neck – well, i assume that was the case – so traveled with blanket round my neck in lieu of a scarf, feeling slightly stupid at all the tolls! we loved the views and the castle and discussed richard lion heart and eleanor of aquitaine and crusades etc, helped by to people dressed as saracen and crusader knights having a mock battle. this obviously delighted our girls!

next day should have been a jaunt to rouen, but my neck thing magnified, and seemed migrainous so i gave into copious drugs and fell asleep for most of the day. chris and the girls mouched around the town, asking for icecreams in french again, and generally being happy.

so rouen was the last full day, and we took a scenic route along the seine – very lovely, and managed to find a carpark in the centre, only going into a buslane accidentally once! we went in the cathedral – sb v keen on cathedrals, discussed all the saints and little chapels, saw a tomb of richard lion heart, discussed why it was written in latin, heard a  organist and then a violist practice for the evening concert = lovely acoustics! moved to a mooch around the town, lunch in a square in the sun and then a bit of shopping. we went in the musee des beaux-artes, [sb choice] sb particularly taken by the modernists. we did have a look at different techniques and a stop by the impressionists, but the later work she liked best. on the walk back we had a stop by a carousel, and both girls practiced their french happily.

last day – sob! we managed to leave the campsite by 11, and only the washkit seems to have gone missing! we drove to sangatte and played happily on its sandy beach  – pretty much all to ourselves – before catching the ferry home. this time the girls changed into their wetsuits, so did get drenched, but didn’t have to cross the english channel with no sensible clothes! perfect end of holiday day really

we had a fab time, just wonderful. ready to repeat next year!

ok, today is the day!

we usually get back from holiday at the last minute, and i really struggle at work for the first week recovering [maybe something to do with the type of holiday we take!]. so it was rather nice to have a relaxing day today and a return tomorrow instead.

we unwound in the morning, watching downloads, then playing castle games. SB had a total usborne lift the flap fest. the see inside science, the earth, the brain and maths. She is quite keen to have more of them, so if and when i do another book order [some time from now, as we are on the stony side at the mo] i might consider the acquisition of the under ground one. and also perhaps the usborne crusader reading book [i can always think of lots of books – will perhaps get chris to go to the big library and see if any there. there should be really?

together we did SOTW as she wanted to get to the battle of hastings – having read all about william the conqueror on hols. however, we did also go to richard lion heart’s castle at les andeleys, so she is muddling the 2 up a bit. we looked at our map book at the vikings.

we went outside and all picked veg – lots of apples are ready, a second crop of raspberries, loads of tomatoes [particularly the ilidi], runner and french beans, some courgettes and spouting brocolli. lots of running about, bb loves eating the ilidi yellow mini toms [they are gorgeous]

back in to play more games with the castle. practice makes perfect, and we played altogether quite happily whilst chris sorted photos of the holidays. the girls then had a bath, whilst i did some catching up with the internet. SB and BB back down, and we watched how things work, and then bb fell asleep and SB and i made some more of her viking brooches - painting and fimo beads. we have refound her science book, and so we stuck in the chromatography.

SHe has also done alot of reading of the arthurian legends, so whilst watching tea, we watched the new merlin from bbc1. now obviously i have a HUGE E-N-O-R-M-O-U-S problem with the basic plot premise, i will let you find that out elsewhere!! but actually, it is an enjoyable romp. i think it is even less true to the basic premise than the tudors is. but i guess the tudors is supposed to be history, and this is a myth, so… i am going to try and forget about the actual plot premise, and enjoy the series, as i think it is going to be v enjoyable. SB and BB quite transfixed.

Growing Old Gracefully

I always swore I would go old gracefully, and not bother with all the hair colouring etc etc, as at some point, you have to then grow old suddenly, or look slightly odd.

it is, of course, crunch time.

well, actually crunch time prob really was a few years ago! But my hair is now most definitely grey looking. The white streaks are now prominent enough for the over all impression from the front def to be grey, but its not uniform, and prob about 5% white?

It has become more noticeable on photos, and also today i plaited my hair in about 8 plaits after laboriously combing out the camping tangles. I haven’t plaited it since sitting the last lot of exams in 2000 – where there were hardly any white hairs! [plaiting hair a good finger distraction activity whilst revising i think!]. So, aarrgh!

I don’t feel at all older though, i’m not sure where all the time has whizzed by, but here, alongside the 40 next year milestone, is the evidence that time is marching on. All sorts of other options change. I’m not averse to change, and don’t fear the aging, just wish for another 10 years before it became noticeable! There’s the child thing. The longer i don’t consider further treatment, the less likely it is, so i guess indecision here is probably a decision. I am not, after all, racing to alter it. There is the pension thing – and in this credit crunch world, is that as sorted as i thought? after all, the equity in this house was supposed to keep us going for a bit [yep, i do have a works pension, obviously - i am anally retentive after all - but chris hasn't that much work to pension]. And i really must make the most of the next 10 years, as they will fly by too.

so, rather odd time of year for resolutions but

1. I MUST LOOSE WEIGHT/ BODY MASS

2. I REALLY SHOULD FIND SOME TIME TO EXERCISE

3. I might henna my hair, but apart from that, i think i will take greyness!

4. In planning for the future, credit crunch or not, life is lived in the here and now, so i MUST NOT STRESS!

musical mondays – tchaikovsky

on a far cry fest. here they are with the serenade for strings. this has LOTS of musical memories for me from the Bucks county string orchestra – my first residential music course.

busy bees

we have had a mostly screech free day here today. BB is *very* piercing! when I got up, BB had been watching magic school bus – and I found another one i hadn’t seen – the microbe one! [yes, chris is going to get round to it!!] SB started off with doing a jigsaw book on ancient egyptian sites. We then read together a story about ramadan and eid, and she went on to look at a the what I believe book. Then did some self directed recorder practice – getting better at hole covering so not so many shrill bits. BB and I did maths at this point. she is starting to add 1 onto things, and subtract 1′s. BB and I then did some alphabet stuff, as she doesn’t know it at all yet.

SB then looked at our usbourne picture french dictionary [after me telling Katy that we weren't doing french reading - of course SB LOVES reading] so we did the a’s and b’s [she complained that only the english words were always a's and b's  ] SO we did it together with my pronunciation  and thinking of sentences to put it in.

SB did singapore maths – must buy the 3 series – whilst BB did starfall and i hemmed the Gi thingy for judo – so at least now she can walk without flappy arms and legs!

And then we had breakfast

OK, it was a late breakfast at 11! BB had already had breakfast earlier and SB and I had brunch. SB did violin whilst I still hemmed, and we are being inventive at the moment, with the majority of the time she is finding sounds, or making up tunes for me or playing scales – she likes scales. At this time an amazon bookseller order arrived from way back – one of the 3rd grade detective books, which she loves, so she tucked herself on the sofa and had finished it within 1/2 an hour. hmm! We also had a parcel from the manor borns, so SB moved onto melrose and croc, [most impressed with inscription from Clo] and BB spent most of the rest of the day in lizard related activities – very enthusiastic! [chris went shopping for gas canisters - so that was his day - rofl!]. SB made up some choc angel delight on her own – though BB sahred the task of eating it.

The girls are really in to playing with the castle and stuff at the moment, i was in charge of dragons, SB had romans and courtiers, and BB assorted lizards and dinodoors [as you do] and they had tea parties, swimming parties and hama bead diving competitions [i need to get out the hoover]. I in the end drifted away [i think I did VERY well to carry on for that long] and SB fancied knitting – so she brought back some yellow moon first cross stitch kits, she did the flower [well, at least she started it and did the centre]. BB played with the kit, but didn’t actually DO any.

They then did some convoluted liz game, I went out into the veg patch and picked loads of greenbeans, toms, brocolli and courgettes. they came out and did whizzing about the garden with lizards, but when i went in to cook the curry for tea they came in too. SB hama beaded, BB did liz dives into hama beads games, and i read them a book about remainder of one.

SB has gone off to Judo [first time since broken foot so fingers crossed] and BB watching the ways things work. I am pondering cars and how much i can stretch too.

edited to add: when SB came back, with free choice to watch whatever she wanted, and BB asleep, she chose Muzzy german level 2. and then we discussed protons and dark matter  She has been a happy bean all day.

also, any recommendations on good balanced books – pref story related and good for 8 year old who has good vocab skills – about the crusades?

musical monday – corelli

soul soothing music. if a far cry ever come to this side of the pond i want tickets btw

Camping and Beaching

we like camping, and we have found that we like sharing out tent as well. it seems to be a good tent for sharing! we went to the east anglian weekend camp for the weekend and met up with some east anglian families. unfortunately loads of the potential attendees had been put off by the weather forecast, so it wasn’t quite as planned! the children all loved having the woods nearby – and got suitably daubed in mud as well. i also suffered from mud foot from an ill judged step – but luckilly that was it! SB was quite skilled at leapfrogging, and chris wowed us with his prowess… lots of games played in and out of tent and children all had fun.

on decamping we stopped at brancaster beach, which i do love. there were loads of shells to be picked up and admired, and lots of running about in blustery wind with end of day sun. just a perfect end to the weekend! [well, that and little chef]

next year, we really must do more weekend camps to the north norfolk coast, as i do love it there. i think i am going to have quite a lot of new years resolutions!!

not blogging

though i wish he would… chris did packing for camping, SB did piano and maths. girls played with animals, watched cable tv at his parents, shopping, home, ‘dunno’ girls had a bath – i came home, and sb v proud of making her own bubble mixture – shampoo and bubble bath. listened to a roald dahl cd. chris did more sorting ‘got grumpy’ and more things like that really.

pretty much his own words except the shampoo bit!
