trying on the armour

OK Kelmarsh

When I finished work last friday, we very slowly got off to camp at Wicksteed park. this was good – in that it was a tenner a night, and bad – in that SB kept up a permanent running commentary on how she wanted to go on this and that ride. obviously we weren’t going on any, just using the campsite. Although we said ad nauseum we would be back, she just couldn’t help it. When I finally lost my temper about it – as she was going on about it IN THE DARK – I said that any more negative whinges and we would def not come back, otherwise we would try to arrange to come back with friends. Clever girl, I thin had hours of – I am so looking forward to going on such and such ride, it will be so exciting, I should really try it out first so I can tell my firends, but … SO not whiney, but still a stuck record. Rather funnily, she did ask me towards the end whether her positive bits were now longer than her whingy bits – rofl. poor girl.

ANyway, Got there, tent up, portaloos on the stinky side – there are ‘real’ loos at a further walk, and after first night I did the walk, with BB in a fireman’s lift over shoulder, as although she had potty and nappy, she insisted on coming, but after 10m or so would collapse dramatically on the ground as it was so far.

but a friendly easy place to camp, and would camp there again.

I was smited down by migraine – getting borin in a painful way, so we were late leaving on the sat for kelmarsh as i rehydrated and swigged potions. wwhen we got there, we were parked near the deep enders, so all walking in together and towards the childrens zone. WOW is the first word really. it was well organised, very streamlined, minimal delay/fuss or queue, well set out and signposted. impossible really without the programme – ?5 extra.

We started off watching a fab play about robin hood – one of SB’s fav stories, and then SB joined in with some quadrilles and drumming in the music tent. we lost the deependers temporarily at that point, as they were romaning. Got to see some knights on horseback demonstrate their prowess at tilting and more cabbage bashing [I guess that is the best use for a cabbage for some blogring members! Yes you who has advised me that it is the lentils in the diet causing migraine!!] We caught up with those from the manor born, and ate some lunch and generally chatted. Nice civil war re-enactment guns in the backround – i am sure my heart stopped for a second!

We wandered up to catch the next children’s play – Nelson’s last hoorah. a really fab theatre company [of 2 people!] and SB loved it. we wandered around some of the re-enactors tents, and SB and chloe quizzed as many people as poss. SB rather likes the spindles and the carding of wool, so lots of looking at that, and they both bought some natural dyed silk from a lady, and we discussed making natural dyes, mordants and so-on. A huge hit was the armourer looking lonely, who asked the girls what they would like to try on – answer = everything, and for the next 20 mins, he took them [and us!] through all that he had. Marcus quite liked the beer maker, and SB smelled the golden hop flowers and indentified them as the source of beer. hmm!!

Time to watch some jousting – rather good, and CHloe and SB had good views upon their own steeds [nearly wrote stallions, but would give entirely the wrong impression] before wandering down to the ‘other side’ and the world war bits, the tea tent – fantastic! ANother ‘flyboys’ display, and a really awsome grand parade out. we were stood with the romans – i rather like romans! some had v v short skirts! and watched them cheer out the other reenactors. particularly funny were the romano british walking like cockneys, and then riding imaginary horses [a la monty python]. I quite liked also the home eddiness, of SB and chloe shouting sinestra dextra at the roman soldiers marching.
We wandered through the ‘village’ and the romano british sailed their coracle, and we had a long chat in the inn. SB flagging, as was BB, so time to go home. Met up with the deep enders, for a restorative cup of tea by their car before going back to the tent.

That was the jokeevening. SB thinks she is a dab hand at jokes, and is now teaching BB execrable knock knock jokes. like – knock knock, who’s there? orange, orange who? knock knock, who’s there? orange, orange who?knock knock, who’s there? banana, banana who? bet your glad I didn’t say orange
girls slept well v quickly, and adults not long behind – heard via twitter that chris is not now the only pole forgetterer – though not really a sport in which he wished to be joined.

Next day migraine epic, had considered just throwing myselfg intolake, but chris packed up tent, and suitably fortified we got to kelmarsh – too late for the roman display i fancied though. We did sort of see a viking vs norman battle, but the rain poured down at that point, so mostly under the mat! i think both girlsmore fragile due to long day previously, and I was not any better! SO we had a gentle wander around the civil war encampment and a restorative icecream [there went the roman games display!] SB again v interested with the spinning and carding of wool. there was also a lady doing wood turning, who gave SB a practice one, so she was v happy with that, and a good demonstration of tools as well.

it seemed sensible to be relaxed and enjoy rather than try and see the bits we had missed the day before, so we went to the family zone, SB got to do some elizabethan dancing – she loves dancing and music, and then both girls got to decorate a crown and do some colouring. We had a good look at the ‘flyboys’ which i found v moving, then a last company performance – don’t mess with bess – and SB finally got picked to perorm, and was Will SHakespeare – and was v proud. we should do more theatre again with her, I don;t know why she didn’t like stagecoach when we tried that out? DOes remind me that she brought the barefoot book of stories shakespeare used for her bedtime stories, and chose the romeo and juliet one for the first night – cue much wailing at unhappy ending! As you like it did better for the second night. as a bit of insight, she asked why they always used someone else to kill snowdrop/snow white etc. ‘if you want it done, you should really just do it yourself’

Both BB and SB said lots of blogable things i have forgotten. that is why i blog!! ANyway, we had a short final drink with deep enders as all children had need of calm down and bed! [and me] and we stopped off at little chef on way back – which actually was quite good again, and children ate well. BB played a cute game with the sauce packets.

And that is that, just need to sort out hundreds of photos of men in costume!

oh yes SB – a century is a large slice of time

Another holiday get home late Sunday again day.

Got back a bit earlier (about 9.30pm – BB of course full of energy) from camping in Sussex.

In Bullet points, pending a proper blog

  • Camped on a nice site.
  • SB found a couple of friends to play with so was happy.
  • BB was in cute urchin mode, got some cheap Croc-a-likes from a local shop which she was very pleased with.
Didn’t get excessively rained on on the rainy day,
  • Plenty of sun to be had on lazy mornings on the campsite
  • Went to the beach,
  • Did Fishbourne Palace again, with the Monstor -Teenies this time,
  • Went to their house,
  • Went to the beach
  • Went in the sea.
  • Went swimming in a nice pool,
  • Went to Portsmouth Historic Dockyards, mostly looking at HMS Warrior and dodging the rain.
  • Went to the Weald and Download Museum, again, to see the bits we didn’t last year.
  • Laughed at various Twitters re the last Harry Potter book.
  • Came home via Amberly Working Museum and a Little Chef-less services where we had possibly the nicest food at a services we have ever had , by dint of buying it from the on site M&S food bit.

Home, to realize that the girls have a dentists appt at 9.10 and we are supposed to be at Duxford Air museum, about 30 miles away at 10 am…. Ahhh :-(

And of course H is back to work :-( :-(

CHEF Sports Day

On Friday, we had a clash, Sports day with one HE group, or a visit to Sacrewell Farm with another. SB chose the sports day, as she really enjoyed it last year, and the farm will always be there to go again to. So me and girls (H at work :-( :-( :-( :-(? ) went to the second of the local home ed group CHEF sports days that we have attended. Last years was very hot. Not so today, though the weather was fine, sun even came out eventually.

Plenty of classic sports day things, like egg and spoon races,

IMG_7455
sack race,

IMG_7438

3 legged race ,

IMG_7515

tug of war etc.

IMG_7493

and of course the obligatory ‘get the parents to do silly things dressing up race‘.

IMG_7481

Finishing up with a ‘bash the watermelon’ game.

IMG_7536

Butterbean wasn’t that interested in the sports, she just pottered about happily though :-)
IMG_7490

And lots of chilling, eating, chatting, running around playing .

Rounded off the day up with a play at the playground/paddling pool area.

Met a chap there who is considering home edding his currently in school
daughter. So he’d chatted about that with various of us. At least we
will have answered the ‘socializing question’ quite comprehensively :-).

His daughter is quite happy in school, though the parents have concerns
about the education being provided in school. Seems a harder decision
to make than if child is obviously having problems with school.

It’s all good fun, and like the camps, a good way to enjoy and celebrate being part of the home ed community.

very tired!

well, i guess it’s poetic justice that I worked this weekend following kessingland, and its been the busiest weekend I’ve worked for ages. In all daytime and called all night. So today I decided to leave slightly early from work and have a short nap. 30 mins later, SB woke me up as they were back home.

it was sports session this morning – must ask Chris whether SB tried the older group? She loves the sports sessions, and BB also likes the careering around she gets to do with Daddy. After it, they went back to the deep end’s new abode. Chris texted this to me, but i must have been at a superlatively busy moment and missed it! Anyway, they had a lovely time, BB was frightened by a cat – we have 2!

both girls did some colouring with chalks on black card to start with – very lovely. SB did do some firework pictures – nothing like being topical! bit of a tussle over BB purposefully squiggling over SB’s picture.
We inspected the garden – i didn’t get to see it at the weekend. french and runner beans shooting up, and some flowers on the runner beans. the broad beans had loads to harvest – so we did that, as did the mangetout. the girls ate them in thier playhouse. still more strawberries and also our weird not quite plum tree – as yet unidentified, but prob if i could be bothered would be! has some ripe fruit that the girls ate. Sweetcorn looking most unhappy – far to wet and miserable for them. things in the greenhouse on the whole happy – toms romping away and some ripening fruits. BB could only be persuaded that the grapes weren’t ripe by eating one.
SB happily did some singapore maths – adding hundred tens and units, whilst BB and I podded broad beans for tea and read books. BB fell asleep on my lap eating dinner – so whisked up to bed, and we’re hoping she will stay asleep.

Sb and I read our birds book from the DK animal series – part of our book people order. She also read the penguin lifecycle book as we read the inroduction and she chose penguins. We followed this up with a bit of david attenborough and his flying with birds [or whatever!] first episode.

Thinking home-eddy thoughts, in part brought on by hearing a girl shout at her mother IN FRENCH!! what a skill. must start thinking more seriously about approaching modern languages and poss latin. [whether i do remains to be seen. hoping that the possible local jolie ronde group may get set up in the location of the possible leader's home as v conveniently located!!]

Kessie blog

Kessingland, well, what can I say! It was really wet, we had to move the tent due to flooding, but there were friends there, and fun to be grasped!

Highlights

Children still having fun. SB played with loads of different friends over the week, few spats, lots of laughter. She did stay up way too late a couple of times!

Sparky?s was a great hit for SB this year, she hadn?t been much before, and she loved it.

Both girls enjoyed swimming ? we went a lot to warm up!

BB?s excitement on seeing a real lion!

BB?s excitement on running, jumping and falling into muddy puddles!

The valiant craft sessions that still went ahead ? we have new tie dye, bits of air dried clay, an aquabeads thing to grab from merry and some gods eyes.

SB going off with friends and their parents happily to the park and to the beach [there was a lot of swapping children!]

Friends ? for chocolate, compassion, cups of tea and chitchat ? weather permitting! Thankyou lots and lots all of you, as particularly the first few days I was lost in a work world of misery.

Meeting New Home edders

Negatives

Well, the biggest was the boggy muddy pondy field.

Rain ? though it actually was only bad a couple of days, its effect on the field was awful!

Not getting to sit out as much to chat, while keeping a loose eye on children

Not getting to know people on the other side of the boggy quagmire!

The swimming pool changing rooms [perhaps that should be higher up on the list?]

Other things

I got 2 sparky?s certificates ? one was for my dancing skills ? rofl!

My mitts and camping socks from t-bird Anni were truly fab

The new airbed also far better than the old!

Doug makes a good fire

?

When we flickr, I will link here. And I reserve the right to add to this things I think of!

today

we went to little nanny’s and gave aunty margaret her pressie. chris has to drive as i was too migrainous. took a long time getting out, and then nearly trapped by village carnival floats! SB and BB gorgeous as usual. aunty m delighted to see them. she used to see SB fortnightly when we lived in leeds, and has really missed it – as have i.

home – sill migrainous. saw surreal final apprentice -good for rory really, the boat would have sunk!

Natural history museum

we went yesterday and it was fab. a full 12 hours out so we were exhausted on return! It did make the journey in easier in that we could swap to tube before the main London station which then took us to south ken. We had brekkie of cheese scones on the train, and a runabout when we got there.

SB chose the young explorers monster pack – which is the dinosaur one. I didn’t think it would take that much time, but it really captured her imagination. I thought there could have been a bit more, but it was free! There was a bag in it with 3 clues in it to identify your specimen. SB was so methodical that she had carefully scoured so well on this that we knew which specimen it was from clue 1, so it was a bit disappointing for us that clues 2 and 3 were the same one. However, we did expand it a bit! i loved her spottisorus [her spelling].

Chris took BB for a run around the whole museum in the end. She did come back and invented her own spider dinosaur! We had our packed lunch and made our way back, looking at the marine fossils, primates and then Chris took BB for a run in the garden outside, and SB and I went to the main dinosaur bit – which she really loved, espec the T-rex. We all joined up in the human biology segment. BB loved listening to the toddler talk and randomly pushing buttons, where SB tried a bit more! I don’t think we quite did enough homework to keep BB interested though, so Chris ended up not seeing much of the museum, and me not much of BB. we can work on that for another time. Chris and I were worn out, so had restorative coffee. we left the museum at 4pm!!

We caught a bus from Hyde Park to Trafalgar square and SB was desperate to climb a lion. We said she had to do it unaided, and she had a damn good try! We went to an Italian just of leicester square for a cheap dinner before heading off home. BB totally charmed the waiters there by scampering about, and giggling.
Such a great day. loads of conversations with Sb about allsorts [including congestion charges and car sharing which she was most taken by!] She def wants to go to the science museum and the earth bit if the natural history, an open top bus ride, the london eye [you get the drift] and would like to live in cenral london!! [no smallholding then!!]

great time out. we did take photos, but you may have noticed we are well behind on flickring again – oops.

Happy birthday fran, eve and rei

apart from dentistry, we went to a party in ipswich, and very enjoyable it was too. SB loved the slide, though it was a bit scary! She very carefully took BB round a couple of times too – what a sweetheart. lovely company and lovely day, thanks Em. will flickr.

girls screamed all the way home – sigh. neither asleep yet either

Boughton House Open day

We all went with the not very local group yesterday to the open day of Boughton House – looking at how an estate works. weather so so! Very interesting.

The girls particularly loved the dogs I think, gun dogs and hunting dogs, sheepdogs etc. They stroked ferrets, grassnakes and slowworms as well as all the dogs, and also some owl chicks and an owl [all supervised!] SB was v good at asking questions, whether it be about dog training, bees, logging or sheep shearing! There was a good not quite enactment of the problems with the enclosures act – something not commonly done, and sparked a few conversations. SB was most happy to get a freshly logged mushroom! Good chris comment – you know the dog chap sounded scottish [yessss] well, thats because he came from scotland [duh!] Apparently chris meant their scottish estate! I chatted to what was prob the duchess about the wonders of home-ed whilst BB played with her dog.
Anyway, pictures to follow on flikr.

We got home and SB did her violin practice and read books. We britannia-ed at bedtime and read when the tiger came to tea.

Today BB has been to baby gym, they have shopped, and SB has been to ballet and done violin. not sure what else. We had lychees and asparagus for tea [separately] 2 treats! yummy. Game playing and more britannia and tut’s mummy at bedtime. we are with sir francis drake in the first, and about to enter the tomb in the second.
