science wednesday

well, latin and science anyway! we managed to get up and nearly there on time – the girls and i would have managed it, but chris stopped to buy apples at the orchard! latin kicked off with revision of what has gone before, as last term things got a bit rusty! at present latin etc is 4 family strong, and it has smallies, middlies and big’uns. the middlies did a quick bit of science on energy, where to find it, and what it might be whilst the big’uns did the latin. a fruity snack and a run about, and the groups swapped, so the big’uns did science and the middlies did french. SB is a big’un, and BB in a bit of a gap between being a smallie and a middlie, so a bit of a loose cannon really. she’ll be a middlie with me for science, and a smallie prob for french. maybe we can get something hands on and crafty going on that she will stick with too.

we did energy anyway. it seemed to work well. we did lots of investigating and looking at things, and the kids have their sheets to go home with and stick in a book! so the session 1 worked well. think session 2 will be even better – and must gradually shape that up!

plenty of nice food and lots of play before we set of with michelle and chloe for the monthly rspb walk.

we adults agreed that it was probably the least enjoyable walk we have done there, though SB with her revisionist history thought it had been great, and couldn’t remember that every single one of the children had had their stand off waily moments [BB>SB>C] poor bb’s trousers kept falling down, leading to 2 nasty falls when running. SB got herself into a wrong side of the bed kind of mood, and had to be gently cajoled into joining the living, at which point she got the wrong side of a bramble… but we kept on. us adults [well mostly me, and maybe michelle] were totally unimpressed when the 1.6km walk ended up not a nice circuit, or going anywhere, but at the road! humph. somehow, back at the carpark the girls all recovered their jollies and played really beautifully for an hour – prob the cause of revisionist history!

we came back, quick tea for SB before judo – which she does really enjoy, so that’s good. BB and I had a snuggle and watched ‘the snowman’ before her bedtime.

New Mondays, with added spice

Been a bit of rearrangement of Monday since before the summer, SB still doing ballet (3.40 – 4.25), but this is now followed by Brownies, which she started this term. Rather annoyingly there is a 30 minute gap between the two (the venues are right next to each other) which is  short enough to mean it isn’t worth going home, but seems long enough when you have to go back out to the ballet class to pick her up to wait for Brownies to start. OK at the mo when we can go in playground, but in winter will need to ask ballet teacher if we can waitin the hall I guess. So it leaves me feeling a bit like a yo-yo, and SB hungry by the time we get dinner :-)

The added spice is that the Punto now has no MOT so only one car on the road at the mo, and the HE sports sessions started up again today. Luckily Helen is working just down the road from there on Mondays, so 7.45 (eeek!!) saw us all in the car. Dropping Helen at work we popped in to the supermarket to buy some stuff for breakfast/lunch. Said they could have doughnuts for breakkie 8-), but then in the car the decided to eat the Wotsits and Quavers they had bought to ahev with lunch – so a nutritious energy packed breakfast before doing sports then :-)

BB tried out the sports session today (guide age is 4-7 for the younger group) stayed in there almost to the end, though she had SB with her, showing her what to do and helping her. Don’t think she’d have been up to doing it all by herself though yet. But seemed keen to do it again, she was so pleased to be doing the same thing as Stringbean. SB was going to try out the older group as well, but decided not to after all, I think she decided she’d rather run around and play instead :-) So there was some  rather noisy and raucous playing, with some grown up HE talk then headed off to the park for a bit. Helen’s text to say she was finsihing work came at the same time as the Deependers were departing, so that was good timing.

Home via Tesco’s just in time to start the above Ballet/Brownies yo-yo. BB fell asleep in car, watched something or oher and did some Fimo-ing with Helen. While waiting for Brownies to start, had a bit of a conversation about what the Scouts etc. are, the Guides, relationship between the two, why maybe the guides etc. have stayed girl only whilst the Scouts etc. accept girls as well now. She did say that she liked the idea of doing wild things with boys ! :-) AS an aside, it’s be interesting to see how the Cubs activities compare to the Brownies.

Children all in bed at appropriate times tonight, so getting things back to normal, I was going to go to bed at sensible time, but haven’t managed it. Have blogged though :-) And have discussed possible science activities with Helen for the Wednesday group

vacance en france

we had a fantastic camping holiday in france! we had sun, we had calm skies, we had no midges, we had wine, scenery, cheese and just a great time. reminded me what camping should be about! the campsite was lovely, nicely kept, clean toilets, and a lovely pool. it had wifi, but we didn’t take laptops.

our crossing not to damaged by the channel tunnel fire, as we had booked ferries, gone down the night before to stay in a premier in for an early start – i really did need to have a relaxing holiday, as various work based events had me at breaking point by friday. [much chilled now!]. calais is really a much superior port to dover. a breeze to pass through, and those lovely french roads without carparking obligatory! it has been quite a while since i have been in rural france, and i was desolated to find that the traditional french jalopy seems to have finally demised in the interim – you know the one! tiny and seeming to run on thin air, held together with a wing and a prayer!

shopped at leclerc, tent up and dinner done. ahh, relaxxxxxx.

next day was a lazyday, pootling around, doing some crafty kits, swimming in the pool etc etc. we went to jumieges abbey the following day and spent quite a while there, as loads of ground to run around in as well, and girls loved it. poor bb had a major hurt on the way there, and my favourite trousers were liberally splashed in her blood. luckilly her knee didn’t need the steri strips. both girls rather nicely said their pleases and thankyous in french, and even asked for an icecream in french – so i was v pleased!!

fancying a trip to the coast, we went to etretat – deviating to a leclerc on the way to buy a few essentials and taking forever. blustery day, and the girls didn’t get changed into sunsuits etc, as weren’t going to get wet. despite me promising them that they would, they were adamant, so they got entirely and utterly soaked, and wore the sunsuits afterwards to go home in! we amassed a huge pebble collection  with competetive acquisition between the 2 of them.

[btw, bb still up, and blogging v difficult whilst being used as a climbing frame]

the next lovely day trip was to chateau gaillard at les andeleys. i say day trip but we are being quite french, and leaving at late morning, arriving in time for lunch picnic! lots of book reading, crafts, playing in park and cycling going on before we adults actually up enough to go out. i slept badly so did something to neck – well, i assume that was the case – so traveled with blanket round my neck in lieu of a scarf, feeling slightly stupid at all the tolls! we loved the views and the castle and discussed richard lion heart and eleanor of aquitaine and crusades etc, helped by to people dressed as saracen and crusader knights having a mock battle. this obviously delighted our girls!

next day should have been a jaunt to rouen, but my neck thing magnified, and seemed migrainous so i gave into copious drugs and fell asleep for most of the day. chris and the girls mouched around the town, asking for icecreams in french again, and generally being happy.

so rouen was the last full day, and we took a scenic route along the seine – very lovely, and managed to find a carpark in the centre, only going into a buslane accidentally once! we went in the cathedral – sb v keen on cathedrals, discussed all the saints and little chapels, saw a tomb of richard lion heart, discussed why it was written in latin, heard a  organist and then a violist practice for the evening concert = lovely acoustics! moved to a mooch around the town, lunch in a square in the sun and then a bit of shopping. we went in the musee des beaux-artes, [sb choice] sb particularly taken by the modernists. we did have a look at different techniques and a stop by the impressionists, but the later work she liked best. on the walk back we had a stop by a carousel, and both girls practiced their french happily.

last day – sob! we managed to leave the campsite by 11, and only the washkit seems to have gone missing! we drove to sangatte and played happily on its sandy beach  – pretty much all to ourselves – before catching the ferry home. this time the girls changed into their wetsuits, so did get drenched, but didn’t have to cross the english channel with no sensible clothes! perfect end of holiday day really

we had a fab time, just wonderful. ready to repeat next year!

arran – midges, wind and rain

we went on a camping holiday last week to arran. we booked a lovely campsite in lochranza, ferry crossings etc and went with good spirit, despite the weather forecast.

we actually did have a lot of fun, but had to work hard for it! we pitched the tent in rain – well, it rained as soon as the outer was up and was very ratty making! it was late when we got their after a long day of travelling. the night was considerably windy, but the tent was rock solid. [tho i did stay awake to make sure!] the next day the weather was ‘variable’ so we went shopping for staples, played a bit on the beach, and me and the girls played mini golf. it then soaked it down! BB hated midges, and SB and i got eaten alive. oh, and the pressurising bit on the stove stopped working, so we had to swap to emergency gas cannisters! the night was again incredibly blustery, but i slept.
the following day [tues] was pretty much solid rain to start with, so we played games in the tent to start with, and then did some craft kits – must add craft kits to camping list! – and got the girls jollied along [though mummy not so impressed!] and then decided to drive around the coast and stop whenever and wherever it wasn’t torrential rain. luckilly there was a glimmer of improvement, so SB and i played on the beach and found stones. it started to tip it down, but we were well wrapped up. back to the car for hot choc, and then drove some more to find a cafe for lunch. suitably restored and in a light drizzle only, we went for a walk to kings caves. we enjoyed the walk so much and did lots of investigating that we never actually got to said cave [which is a shame], but we were all happy. the midges descended – 6 o clockbeing midge o clock and we ran back to the car and had a restaurant meal to inject further cheer into the day.

wed was glorious and sunny – hooray! we cycled to a nearbye castle to explore, spent time playing on the beach and then cycled back for lunch. had we cycled a bit further we would have found a cafe, never mind! we then drove to a lovely pebble beach, where there were lots of rockpools and crystal clear water, and we saw lots of wildlife. unfortunately when we were investigating anemones, BB was investigating the flotation of crocs, so there was a mad dash to save one from drifting to kintyre! this was def A Good Day! i didn’t sleep well from this moment onwards as taking max piriton and anti itch creams for the total body rash of bites! SB tried to swallow a tablet as we hadn’t got the syrup, but she hasn’t developed the technique yet. oh, and we think we might have seen an eagle!
thurs another day of variable weather – mostly drizzle, some heavy and some just midge. we did some art and craft in the tent and then went to the heritage museum. this was rather fab, and we actually spent the whole day there. it had a nice cafe, and also a weaving and spinning workshop. BB was less enthusiastic, but fell asleep for most of the afternoon. SB keen for chris to make her a weaving frame to do more, as she quickly got into it. she also wants a spinning wheel for christmas – not quite so sure about that one, but will perhaps see about a drop spindle if she fancies it instead!

fri , not quite so variable! in fact it was quite sunny in parts!! so we went to a beach with sand – actually it was quite nippy at this point, but both girls got stuck right into making sandcastles and were happy. we moved onto a cafe for lunch and then we had decided that we really really wanted to see the stone circles, so did a walk to those. weather stayed fine, and girls had a good walk. lots of conversations about this that and everything and lots of smiling. fantastic! SB singing her ‘show’ songs continually, so even BB and I know most of the words now.

sat was time to go. we packed up everything but the shell whilst it rained, and the girls were helpful and lovely. we treated ourselves to lunch at the cafe, hoping the rain would ease, but instead it turned from moderate drizzle to really rather wetting! chris, me and SB were soaked. by the end- after we had convinced sb that although she was v helpful, we didn’t want to her to be wet and miserable,  chris and i were in a state of giggles at how awful it was, and the fact that our reactalite glasses were convinced it was sunny – so we were wet and looking at things in extra gloom!

so we went for retail therapy, and visited the cheesery – yummy peppercorn cheese amongst others, and arran aromatics – various rellies presents bought! oh, and another cafe for cake! a final beach visit and then the ferry
home was in stages, we spent a night at the premier inn in carlisle – and were inpressed with it and the service there. and we stopped off sunday lunch at jax and co, for something to eat and a good natter.

overall impression – regret for the holiday we didn’t get. arran was lovely, we had identified walks and cycles to do, but the weather was against it. die hards might have still gone ahead, but lets face it, SB and BB would have been really miserable, and we would have been moved from borderline miserable to outright!! so we did crafts and made of it what we could. SB never wants to return to scotland, as she and i still v midgy.

there and back again – SOTP

firstly thanks to the SOTP family for a lovely weekend at their house. good friends, good food and happy children. we took loads of photos, and will no doubt flickr them. thanks also for giving us a room in the house. although i am sure our tent would have been fine [it proved itself later in the week] i think to have put tents up and down in adverse conditions more than once would have made the week seem stressful! sorry for those whose tents came down in the night though…

Had a lovely time chatting, and meeting up with the wellyboots family for the first time, as well as much loved old friends. SB and BB had great fun as well. glad to see that SB happy with her friends and reasonably confident after a few major wobbles since her accident. there were loads of games going on, and the rainy weather didn’t seem to hold things back. BB was charming and adorable nearly all the time! i loved her attachment to her capri sun DS. i also like the video of her grape eating on flickr. she repeated the trick more wildy several times whilst we were camping!

talked books – always a good subject, and came away with some to read. always good! some interesting talks on new atheism. which to me seems currently to be a particularly rude and brattish way of thinking – i think i perhaps am not  keen supporter of anything new [think new labour!] if this is going to be the face of atheism, i will be an agnostic [preferably of the old variety!!] you can’t do much exciting with people hedging their bets.

we decamped [well, ok not quite] as we had a schedule to keep on the sunday and went to catch the ferry to Arran. i am considering here what exactly to say about the holiday. i might facebook [as tim says its my go on scrabulous] and come back to post again.

Feeling happier today.

SB went off for her 2nd day of her Musical Theatre week. She was a bit weepy about it again, esp. with Helen in the morning, but then got herself organised, did her own packed lunch and went and found her old jazz shoes from when she did Stagecoach to take with her. I said I would wait at th place for a bit before I left her. Excuse to sit on a  sofa and read a book for  1/2 an hour anyway :-)
So seemed much happier today with it. not really much sitting about time it sounds like, so that  maybe suited her more. Sounds like they were moslty doing singing and  doing sticking – presumably for scenery or something. Said she didn’t get to talk to people much, but that was becuase there wasn’t much time except lunch, though she said she did try to say hello to some of them.. I’m wondering if the whole worrying thing was more to do with her being left  than anything else? Since hurting her foot she still doesn’t like being left around the house for long without knowing where you are.

So I think we have got over that one. There was a sweet stall with sweets in jars which every since buying some at FoH she has liked the idea of. So we bought some sweets there afterwards (oh, and popped into Adams to get her more knickers and ended up with more leggings as well.. ). i’d said she could ahve her choice of dinner tonight, and she’d said chips, Ginger beer (fizzy drinks being a very, very occasional treat in our house for her) and Ice Cream. Though she spotted a Watermelon so wanted that instead :-)

Other than that, my parents have been around again  – helping sort out pre-family party on Saturday. (Helen’s parents coming later today – coming early so they can help out prepare – do you think they are trying to tell us something ;-) ) So they have been doing useful things about the place, while entertaining BB as well. When I came back she was hiding in a  box on the lawn being a Bunny Rabit in it’s burrow :-)

I’ve got  dining table covered with sorted out crap to rehome, and the hallway has managed to fill up with stuff again – when Kirsty came down a  couple of weeks ago I’d just given it a good sort out :-(

Had me morning tea, time to do a few things

festival of history!

i have got there!!

it was lovely meeting up with so many people, we loved it again. it was trickier this year due to sb’s foot – first day we walked too much and she was really pained so we left earlier than planned.

we loved – punch and judy show; bzents – sb in horatios last hurrah, totally fab childrens hysterical historical plays; the roman legions; the kinghts fighting and jousting; the fire eating stilt walking fool; d day re-enactment – firing sb’s enthusiasm for a subject not really thought of here yet. also just walking around the re-enactors a lot of them took a lot of time to talk to us and answer questions. sb is getting more and more confident at asking and we went round pretty much all the areas chatting and seeing what was going on, sb mostly taking the lead with who to talk to and what she wanted to know. the living history tent also excellent with a go at all the archaeological techniques and easy hands on for both girls. bb particularly loved the skeletons. we impressed the display girl as me and sb using ‘proper’ bone words. not hard really for me though is it!! the head of saxon finds who was manning the metal detector finds was also a treasure himself, and they all had oodles of time. the family zone with the ever popular sandpit, games, morris dancers, bands etc. sb loved actually one stand that had a travelling show theme with pretend animals etc. sb and i also popped into one of the more ‘adult’ talks on dressing mr darcy, and had a look at costumes. not for long, but she thought she would like to go to more of those next year!
i think that one of the most impressive things is that english heritage are so obviously very keen to give a hugely satisfying day out and have put lots of thought and effort in. we will hopefully be doing it again next year, and hope people might again join us. tent sharing is fine and easy for a weekend, and saves a lot of tent taking down effort!!

now i have thousands of flickr photos to do.

slightly terrifying was doing a wee in the cubicles by the main arena whilst the parlimentarian big guns were going off.

visitors!

ok, i am going to alter the time stamp so they all appear right. amd i am prob going to add things, as TBH, my memory is a bit affected by the quantity of bloody migraine drugs ingested. i hate migraines. i hate their ability to suck away my life.

anyway, we tidied manically so kirsty and her family could see their way into the house. it still wasn’t actually tidy mind you! saturday was spent in eager anticipation of their arrival, so we did some home ed stuff to take away the constant are they nearly here yet chorus. SB and BB both eagerly did maths and handwriting – i think they thought if they did it quickly it would speed K’s car! SB also did a violin practice. no further memory of the day!! K and co arrived, so lots of playing and ds-ing! we had tea and wine. a v late night for the kids too!

the next day we went out to an rspb event to celebrate the opening of a new reserve. the worst thing about it was the prickles. they had just strimmed/mowed the field, and it was obviously v thistly, and k and i – and to a lesser extent the girls – kept getting prickles in our feet as crocs were really not the best footwear for us to have chosen! SB and A got facepainted. BB and M moaned at the lack of cake. we had fed the troupes before leaving, but obviously should have taken cake with us [we had loads at home!] as it was too temptingly on display, but ridiculously expensive. after a bit of discussion, we went towards the pond dipping and owl pellet zone. SB said it was owl puke, but he insisted it was not as the pellets were coughed up. i am sorry, but they still must be coughed up from some stomach affair rather than lungs! Anyway, SB and A were transfixed by the owl pellets, and found loads of bones in them. SB in particular found loads of skulls, and learnt the difference between field mouse and vole. the man was really friendly and knowledgeable so a great HE moment! we joined M and an extremely grumpy BB ponddipping, and found lots of damsel fly larvae, water beetles, water boatmen and a few fish. ALso a blood sucker – yuk!! We then played in some sand to find things, but most had been found already as it was getting to the end of the day, and then looked at loads of moths that had been temporarily captured the night before.

the mon i went to work, and BB and M got firmly fixed in matter/antimatter mode. mostly after rowing over the didicar we have. BB would try the patience of a saint at times, and M and her seemed to gravitate towards each other to shriek. not so restful! they also did lots of fab fimo-ing. i was so impressed by BB’s snowman – well, for a bit anyway, as she then overdecorated it into a blob! BB does seem to be v dextrous for these things. luckilly on the tues – when again i was at work – merry and girls came across, and all had a great time playing and bindeezing,

nearly forgot to blog!

had a busy week and a v long day yesterday – my excuse! oh, and really need to be sorting holiday snaps.

today was a bit manic making SB’s scarecrow costume with us all sewing on patches and then manically getting out! SB was sitting on the rainbows float – the theme for our rural village’s fete was … farming! Anyway it was a good turnout, a load of stalls for village groups, all with tombola or raffle, and cakes for sale! there were a couple of extortionately priced kiddie rides too. the girls both got a ride on each. I think SB was happy to be on the float this year, though she said it was hot.
BB has not been in frame today, she has been v waily, so we left earlier than we might have done. she fell asleep on the way back. SB and i read the stories in barefoot book buddhist tales, looked at bits about tudors and did some piano practice before bb woke up. we then replenished the bird feeders [tht takes some time!] and the girls played whilst i planted out sweetcorn. SB really is a lovely older sister to have.
i think that about finishes today. execrable band in one of the pubs playing

Feet and Romans

Monday, other than hospital not much seemed to happen. spent ages on the phone getting a hosp appt. for that day as they had given us one for next week. Then phoned various people to tell them SB wouldn’t be attending her various classes because of her foot. hospital appt ended up not being until afternoon, which was good as it meant Helen could make it as well. I think SB finished off some hama beading she’d started off about 5 times.
My parents came round in the morning as they were going to look after BB when we went into hospital. Chatted, girls played games, read etc. with them.

I took SB into hospital, consultant happy with her progress, should be no need for skin graft on the heel, healing up nicely. Removed the back slab. Heel injury still painful but getting there. she is now able to place her front part of foot on the ground. Can’t think what else we did when we got back home.

Tuesday we went off for a HE group event on Romans at a local museum. Almost didn’t go, I felt like staying home, but SB keen to go so I made the effort. Interestingly, rather than taking longer as might be expected, we got out quicker than normal with SB partly out of action. In 35 minutes they were dressed, washed, hair brushed etc., we’d also gone over the road and bought stuff from the bakers for lunch and got them in the car ready to go. Obviously should not leave SB to get herself sorted. She said it’s because she and BB go and play….
First session was good, it was done by a chap who does talks etc. with kids about Romans.

IMG_8721

He was dressed in a Centurions outfit, was mostly about life as a roman soldier, their clothing/armour, their weapons etc.

IMG_8722

The local Roman legions’ standard.

IMG_8723

How they used the different javelins.

IMG_8730

Sb was a hopping Legionnaire :-)

IMG_8735

some others formed a Testudo and we all threw stones at them (well foam balls….)

IMG_8737

Demonstrated the Scorpion.
IMG_8738IMG_8740

Demonstrated the various bits of personal kit they would have carried. He was a bit coy about saying what the big T shaped nails were for (crucifixion) – i reckon it’s those gory bits that kids like best :-) – SB wasn’t fazed by it hen I told her – BB would probably want to try it out on someone… (it’s already come up before, and it’s a pretty fundamental bit of Christianity)
Had a pleasant lunch outside in the sun. followed by a session making roman pots using coil or thumb/pinching as the romans might have done. Enjoyed by the kids but would have been better I think if we had a bit more time and could have looked at the sorts of pots the Romans made/used.

IMG_8747 IMG_8744 IMG_8748
We then had a litle look at the musuem, particularly the Roman bits and the fossil bits. tried on a roman helmet and did some rubbings.

IMG_8750

Afterwards I considered going to find WH Smiths so SB could spend her voucher, but decided I didn’t want to push her around in the big buggy whilst dragging a tired and grumpy BB with us. So went straight back to car and came home, Where we all flopped for a bit, do to warm car, being generally tired – it’s hard work for us all i think taking SB out in her current state. Did manage to play some chess and Uno with SB and look at some books with BB.

Finished up the day watching a bit more of Sound of Music with SB, finished just before the bit here the fighting starts, which is apparently her favorite bit
