The Longest Day

Which is what Tuesdays have turned into, esp. so for Helen who should be out the door by about 730 am and often not back until 7pm + (about 7.30pm today) :-( and lucky if she gets a drink, let alone anything to eat during the day.
But also SB’s swimming lesson has moved  (since she moved up a class) to 5.30pm – which means us leaving the house just at the time everyone is starting to flag, you are thinking about feeding children etc. and we get back at about 6.30, needing to eat dinner, all feeling tired, getting crochety, children seemingly extra noisy etc. It’s be ok just taking SB out, but dragging an almost 3yo out of the house for an 1 1/2 just to go to someone else swimming lesson isn’t a great plan. Last time she fell asleep on the way home, today she stayed awake, but didn’t eat any tea anyway and was running on that need to sleep speed fuel that toddlers have.
Have talked to the leisure centre about moving classes, but it’s complicated by people waiting to move up from other classes as well, avoiding other clashes, fit in with other things we are doing etc.

Other than that, this morning went in baths,  bickering and books, SB had only been up about 2 minutes and they were bickering about something that BB had done to annoy her (BB does plenty at the moment), then they argued about each not having enough space in the bath….

eventually we got children, books, bottles etc together and headed to the library, via the bottle banks, BB looking very silly wearing a sou’wester hat backwards, looked like a big red headed duck.

I day dreamed in the library while someone read them Mr Men stories, they cut and stuck and coloured. Oddly a pair of scissors disappeared – did a toddler pinch them to threaten other kids with at playgroup, or maybe they went off to join the knife that disappeared through a  rift in the space time continuum at Kessingland last year? they got more books, we came home. SB slipped over coming in the door, so went back outside, twirled around on the drive and slipped over harder, hurting herself….. – cue wails.

Much reading of books, before lunch. Afterwards, SB  had found a  colouring competition in magazine, so spent a fair while colouring that in, she wrote out the address on the envelope, wrote her name and address on  a piece of paper and we posted that off. BB didn’t want to be left out, she scribbled on some paper, put in an envelope and scribbled on that, so we posted that as well (too ourselves).

Also did some more maths this pm as well. And they played some complicated game with finger puppet animals and the Operation travel game whilst I got dinner cooked. Until it was time to go out to the aforesaid swimming lesson.

By the time the kids were in bed it was time to collapse in our respective heaps and watch a couple of episodes of Numb3rs, which does have some inventive, if sometimes a little implausible plot lines

Soothing Saturday

we planned a chilled day today – or rather hope to plan! S and I had a nice morning snuggle in her bed with me making up stories for her, and just chatting about this and that. When she went downstairs I fell asleep until BB came up with a card she had made for me – ahh.

SB did a long violin practice [we're getting to the end of the book and the musical antics of last week also enthused her] and a MUCH shorter piano, as we’ve hit a piece where she needs to move her hands, and at the present it is a bit of a brick wall, so gently manouvering around it. She won’t move on till she can do it btw.

A mood enhancing high carb lunch to gee us parents up! Worked to, with strong coffee!! Then SB did loads of maths – again a book end in sight, read cover to cover jan’s Richard scarry books and then did some circle based painting.

BB had been doing jigsaws and also painting – well demanding I make circles for her to turn into things! i read a variety of books, and she pretended to read some too. Lots of counting involved, as she likes counting. She then went on to play with the playdough – after having a sulk that it wasn’t fimo – rofl! rule is we do fimo with SB and mess with playdough otherwise – I am so harsh.

BB was the one with particular post camp behaviour [and parents - me flickring and chris just being out of avery one's way!] SB was fine.

Watched some numberjacks and roar pre tea, and little house on the prairie post tea. SB discussed the story as one where an 80 year old dies, and her friend pretends to die so she gets to see her family. SB just didn’t understand why they wouldn’t visit. I explained travelling being so much more of a deal than jumping in a car!
With BB reluctantly going to bed, SB and I did some sewing as she wants to make her a sewn card. we cannabalised some shorts embroidery, and she cross stitched one onto a card very nicely. She is now reading the next magic tree house – Ghost Town at Sundown, so as well as the little house on the prairie, I need to find a few other books that vaguely tie in for her ‘choice’ box.

Hmmm, time for a cup of coffee methinks. oh, SB can remember roman numerals – she knew a VII was 7!

There and back again

After [for me] and all to brief dose of Nic camps, we came back with an easy drive and at the lunch stop, chris read his texts, and the local friend had asked for a playdate today or tomorrow. Since SB and her get on like a house on fire, we are both keen to encourage this as often as possible! So since I knew I would be ‘slow’ on Sat [and I am] we chose the Friday. She finishes school at 15:30, and we got back 5 mins later! So a quick into playing mode.

Actually SB did very well, as she could have been ‘camped out’ But her and R couldn’t quite make up the same story to do with the castle and knights, so I intervened, and we played continuo – which we all enjoyed. I did the adding up for R, and SB showed off! SO we then moved onto fimo. R has never done any before, so I helped her work out how to do a zebra – and she did that, and then a kitten in a basket. Baked it and then she could take it her [parents v interested in fimo, and gave them the webdetails of a reputable local supplier - rofl!]

SO we took her home 3hours later and then relaxed in their entirely fabtastic house with wine and crisps having a good natter, whilst the girls were altogether better at playing together with pollypockets! finally coming home nearing 10 – thus no flickr or blogging as once girls asleep, chris and i relaxed with QI and a drink of coffee – i neither managed to watch or drink!

Chris cooking a parental pick me up for lunch [high in carbs!]

relatives and raptors

mum has retired to bed early as exhausted – so are we all. I a even more in awe of the home educators who are trotting about gaily. We have had 2 days of trotting about and I am exhausted!

Yesterday I took mum and the girls to visit Little Nanny. We had a lovely day, the girls reading books [SB a DK one and a book house one about big cats and grasslands respectively, and BB on apple tree farm] and playing games with the Nanny’s [rummy, patience and whos who] whilst I tried to make sure my mum didn’t do any helping [as post op] and little nanny was sorted out for food etc. And the girls didn’t spread chocolate everywhere… SB also did a piano practice after tea – entirely unsolicited! BB did both piano and violin – very cute.

today, BB and SB made a card for Chris’s Uncle Robert who had a 70th birthday party today [one of the 2 birthday parties we didn't attend today] My parents were invited to both of them, and orignally i was going to Josies, but Mum was worn out after cambridge followed by little nanny and had a lie in [for her] and felt in need of TLC.

IMG_0534

TLC duly given whilst SB did maths and writing, and BB also did some maths – counting and making numberjack buddy blocks. Mum’s raised eyebrows over the term was neatly shown when SB continued to call them bloody box. SB read mum a book about why we eat, and discussed healthy eating whilst eating more of the trick or treat spoils – rofl.

IMG_0542

mum felt more chipper after lunch, and the girls needed a run. Dad also here, but has been doing our garden – it looks fantastic. He is so helpful. And no, he doesn’t have to do it, I tell him this repeatedly, but also that he is my hero for ignoring me – mixed messages! Anyway, he had had enough, so we all piled out to the Raptor centre [apart from Chris, who had had enough with windows, and puled off down to his uncle robert's birthday - his uncle robert is not v well]

We enjoyed looking at the rescued birds, alot of them were in Harry potter movies, so had their star portraits – SB wondered if Harry Potter was about owls then – bless. Nearly ready I think to start on Harry Potter. Then there was the flying display, which was fab. The main man doing it was very knowledgeable, obviously loved the birds, and talked both top them and us. I loved the owls best. The audience got to stroke the 2 owls – BB and SB very keen to do so. lots of discussion round them, and a trip to the shop, where they each got a flier for 40p – bargain!!

IMG_0562

IMG_0639 IMG_0635

there is also a craft shop on site – a bit deadly, but SB noticed they had a small haberdashery [we had been discussing haberdasheries, and their decline, so yes, she does know the word!] so I bought her some headed pins, she also noticed Mum looking over some leather purses, and asked me if we could get one for her for Xmas – so a little pantomime, of me telling SB to ask mum what she would look for in a good purse, and a good colour – ie mum picked one out more or less – and then we bought it! SB very proud to have chosen it – my credit card slightly more surprised! [I also bought an Xmas tree dec for me, and one for SB and BB's tree]

Home, and I made enchilladas for tea – yummy. Girls flew their flyers – nearly confiscated them at one point mind you! SOme numberjacks, game playing and BB to bed, SB watched various fireworks going off and then played more card games before her bedtime.

I am knackered, Mum already in bed. I’m waiting for Chris though, so he doesn’t come in to a dark house – hurry up sweetheart!

Notes for another time

Tues: chris’s parents here, maths, writing, lots of baking, read a bok about oceans and fishes, SB read another fish book, grek myths and legends.

Wed: my parents here. maths, writing, piano and violin practice, rainbows. fimo halloween decs. trick and treating, spooky picnic. games

Thurs: sightseeing. Sedgewick museum of earth sciences, fossil hunting, drawing a dinosaur, following a trail. Peeking in at various colleges and a nice lunch . violin practice, reading about the body. playing with grandparents

I think I am now a bit partial to sewing

said SB when BB gone to bed. I would quite like to try the doll kit [from Vix and M some time ago]. OK. I get out my sewing and the doll kit, we decide to start easy with the waistcoat and she is away. no stabbing incidents. We are slightly disagreeing on what some f the clothes might be, so if anyone done this, could they comment on whether the red bits make dungarees, and whether the yellow flower is a skirt for the yellow and red top bit? Anyway, a very happy hour.

Other than that, whilst I was at work a massive tifying fest. i rescued the little angel dress knitted by aunty phyllis [little nanny's sister] from the bin pile.

Angel in our garden

Sb has done lots of webland, some handwriting, read usborne first elizabeth 1 and looked at quicklinks and decided that the dolphins at daybreak is a totally fantastic book and read the lot. Also been to ballet.

BB and I have baked choc cupcakes, she has been a total pickle otherwise. hmm!!

Halloween preparations

Yes I know its American, yes, I know it is also druidic, and no we are not doing anything educational at all with it.

Instead, we are – allegedly – having fun. I am not entirely convinced, after all, the girls are at an awkward phase of sibling relations, and I am not at my most emanating gentle calm vibes mode. After all, how can you share making red icecubes? theres just nothing to it?? OK, i guess one could have stirred, and the other put in the colouring, but only BB wanted to do it, she found the tray , asked nicely, so why make some bit for SB – I did say she could find her own tray, but of course we didn’t have another one…

Actually, that was just the end, we have been rather more positive for a lot of the day. SB did a quick bit of writing practice – getty and dubay C – and we read the DK space explorers book together. We all played with jigsaw and had a toy food picnic. Chris vanished to sort out the clothes mountain in the spare room [ultimately the best place to be!]. Sb insisted on having her haricut so she could brush it better – so 3 inches removed!
IMG_0317

BB wanted to make cupcakes, so we made halloween cupcakes – orange food dye and sprinkles integral to mixture. they were lovely, and didn’t keep to be iced! BB chose too large cups, but the advantage was that the cupcakes came out weird shapes, extra halloweenness!

IMG_0330_edited-1

There was a debate about going swimming, but instead we did pumpkin cutting. Well, I was directed by BB and SB, did all the hard bits. they drew fiendishly difficult patterns for me to cut out. SB’s I was quite good with. BB’s I artistically ‘re-imagined’ [ooh, battlestar galactica soon!]

it was this big! IMG_0338

The choice then between hama/fimo and sweetie making – yep we made peppermint creams – orange food colouring and egg white powder as not cooked recipe. Oh, and we used vanilla essence instead of peppermint. So peppermint creams re-imagined too. And it was only after the peppermint creams that my patience, and SB and BB’s ran out.

IMG_0351

SO we are snuggling – different parents each – and watching TV. We are on the next magic tree house book – dolphins at daybreak, so must look out some related books to read through.

edited to add: Have had tea and bath, calm restored. I have had a glass of wine, and hope the pumpkin soup I am making for Halloween won’t suffer too much as a result! SB reading about birds in the DK picturepaedia, and BB playing with numbers. Soon BB will be off to bed, and SB fancies  fimo then when a bit of peace.

SAD

I am just not so good at this time of year. I get grumpy for no apparent reason, decided that I am crap at everything I do [well, even crapper than I normally rate myself] and just fid it hard to shift. Thinking about whether those lights actually work, whether i should get one – what a lot of money! and whether it is because I am actually just crap. This time of year is a big reflection time, so will be putting up something home-eddy at some point! [not a surprise announcement of schooling!]

This week may have gone more sadly/badly because of the death of my godfather, but I have been crap and morose at work as well as home, and it just isn’t on. Work is not a place that accepts [or should accept] anything less than as near perfection as manageable, so feeling that let things down there a bit too.

SO at home, chris and the girls done lots of shopping trips as far as I can see! we had that lovely day at Michelles, and SB also has had a lovely playdate with Rainbows R. oh, the girls had a midweek swim, which they both enjoyed too.

I was at home thurs, but not sure what we did at all, apart from Chris took the girls shopping. SB did some maths, something on the web, we watched some downloads?? Nope, no idea – should have blogged! oh, a lot of playing with the castle! Oh, and the lego. Bit of a little house on the prairie revival as well.

Today both girls have spent a fair bit of time on the computer – poisson rouge and starfall for BB with a bit of rainforest maths, and education city and rainforest maths for SB. SB and I read the fall of the romans in story of the world, and then some more about atilla the hun in raiders and invaders – and discussed why both books might have what might be ‘key facts’ different. The some looking at their internet links – which were poor. luckilly Sarah blogged, so we snitched some of her roman links instead. might look up the usborne ones- must be some quicklinks on their site.

Starfall Education city - maths

SB did some running and sports with Chris in the garden – new trainer/running shoes from la redoute which she isn’t sure whether she likes. BB and I have had lots of snuggles and silly play. SB took herself to the piano to do some practice – asked me to help when her new piece has made her move her hands – cue much panic! do I play the note they’ve written or the finger number? both dear, you have to move your fingers – aargh.

i had set up some pots of glue, assorted bits to stick on and some pringles tubes in the kitchen for them to fiddle with. SO they did that for a bit. SB got glue all over a new dress, despite me begging her to take it off and minor scene about that with me stumping off into garden – just as she spills it everywhere.

IMG_0303

SB and BB rather nicely playing together – BB is doing match and sort with lego with SB! Dinner ready. off I shoot.

IMG_0314

Back again. SB fancies watching robin hood, so we will do that. Chris has downloaded torchwood as we have run out of regenesis. Enjoying that too. they do like filming the girls bottom in tight jeans! That isn’t exactly the bit I watch for though!

Guilty Pleasures!

Chris’s parents have been here tday to look after the girls whilst i was at work and he was working on the window. s we have had the heatng n. t is still on! and it is lovely. must switch off tomorrow though.

Sb has bee very good, and has done her singapore maths, and her getty and dubay – finally started book C – woohoo. She has read lots to the – scored easy impressing marks! Nana French read one of the explorer books back – about polar expeditions.

When I got home we did some violin and piano practice too – SB was supremely confident about playing to them. Def proud Mummy moment – twinkle twinkle on the violin and haydn was a happy man on the piano.

Lots of game playing also – both girls keen to tell me all the games they had played. BB bamboozled nana with her playing who’s who, but i was actuall surprised at how well BB had the concept and what to ask for.

Watched some downloads, and a fab junior jackanory about the sorcerer f samarkhand – don’t know about the girls, but I was spell bound.

BB fell asleep, SB finished her magic tree house book, and we did some ‘proper sewing‘ [her phrase!] . Nice start to what is going to be a frantic week [in part because I've left my submission of evidence of learning to the last minute for work]. Chris has done a god job on the window today to. smiley faces all round.

home maid

so, having had B educationally polishing the staircase yesterday and picking fruit and veg, today she became the kitchen maid and the dairy maid.

She wanted to make some bread rolls, so she did this, with minimal help from me as i was busy helping BB make shortbread cookies [yummy]. So having got the dough proving, we decided to make our own butter to go with the rolls. Added several coins in the hope that it would be quicker to do, and it was! SB read the dairy section on a farm through time and a few other pages.

Shaker shaker butter maker bread dough vs cookie dough

We then had a lunch pause with number jacks and mama mirabelle fix – i think we are watching downloads too often. hard when BB can put them on. we minimised TV by having it in a different room. I a kinda hoping its a phase in winter as not out so much.

SO we went outside for most of the afternoon. doing an autumnal glue picture mostly scattered poppy seeds = which they both loved doing. chris was doing more fixing of the window. Both girls were very interested in the whole business. General playing too.

IMG_0229 IMG_0226

IMG_0244_edited-1 IMG_0241

SB did some piano practice, means a lot to me, but on GBDF ad ACE she has got to Haydn was a happy man – a tune often sung in our family. BB bounced and did lego. We ate the yummy rolls. We got a free book where did the river go, and SB enjoyed reading that whilst BB and I played catch. The pages were in order of clues by maths at the bottom she enjoyed the challenge.

IMG_0257 IMG_0260

SB and BB then had some lovely play together with dolls house and animals whilst made dinner, and then I took BB to bed whilst SB did some jump ahead.

IMG_0262 IMG_0265

Lovely day. tomorrow SB wants to make cheese!!
