Under the Weather

we all had a lovely swim together today. BB adores the water and kicks and splashes and likes being whisked about in it. SB is equally happy, she was trying to be the whale from planet Earth TV prog after i had made BB the wale and come out entirely – rofl! [we watched it on video yesterday] SHe is still practising back stroke, and doesn’t sink quite so quickly. However, we got out early as SB had a sudden loss of energy and felt ‘unwell’. So we got out, and went home, and both girls then slept until woken up at 4 [about 3 hours]. We thought SB in particular needed it, even though we will no doubt notice the consequences tonight!

Whilst they were asleep, i blogged and then we went out into the garden to make a late start on the fruit tree planting as the ground was ready.

having roused the beans and fed them, SB finished her plaster of paris box kit by painting it, and once dried, gluing the bits on. Its a fabkit actually, even though SB was disappointed that the picture on the front is far bigger than the box. She also decorated grandads present with stickers.

IMG 0864 IMG 0854

A bit of a relapse and watch of toy story 2 . BB poddled about – and amused us by the total greed that she shows with dried apricots. She can just about wodge 3 in her mouth and continue chewing, but still tries for 4. She also had fun shooting about on her pushalong. SB did some webland, and then played with geomags whilst I made tea – chilli for us and veg and rice stew for her. She didn’t like it.

IMG 0871 IMG 0865

Because she had a late sleep, we all cuddled up together to watch tonights planet earth. SB loves glaciers, and enjoyed it. She and BB have finally relinquished themselves into the arms of morpheus.

IMG 0887 IMG 0877

time to breathe. work tomorrow.

Very tired

What are the beans up to?? Might have to change the title to the Nocturnal Beans at this rate!

IMG 0712

Being so tired does dreadful things to the memory too. i know we did do some more Hama – both maxi and midi beads, and SB did some singapore maths 1a on subtraction. i guess the single biggest chunk of the day was spent doing more science experiments – this time with magnets. We did all the magnet experiments in the kingfisher hands on science book, and more besides.

IMG 0705 IMG 0676
What a minimalisitc magnet!

SB did a fair bit of jump ahead maths, and also had her ballet lesson. She reluctantly watched time team with us – we are stretching her tv viewing!! oh, i remember, we did a bit of looking for OS symbols on maps – a thing Chris had got ready for puddlers, and wasn’t really done. Aagh, we haven’t got a recycling thing ready! This piccie is of our PVA suncatcher.
IMG 0673

chris has just gone upstairs to bed, and I think I will follow – yawn! PS merry, I spot you looking at flickr – rofl!

Still chocolate/wine deficient!

And another poor night from the little beans…

So Chris got up with them this morning. SB used her puff up paints on a T-shirt bought for the job. Must get thankyou’s done and out. She did only get them on real birthday not party though! Then to the library for story time and some cutting and sticking whilst I got a few tasks sorted at home.

Chaos as the beans returned and i did the readingnew library books stint! I think a my little pony annual followed by spongebob was way beyond the call of duty though! BB fell asleep, so we decided it was games time. SB chose walk the plank and the around the world game . She then wanted to do some knitting. I honestly looked at the instructions very closely in the galt first knitting box, and I honestly did not understand a single word! You what? was the best term. SO we had a go at the french knitting, and although she could do this, a few times round and it got a bit boring. So a go at explode the code – she really wasn’t in the mood, but we persevered for a bit and then gave up. Instead we organised the seed potatoes for chitting. We got the Thompson and morgan favourite half dozen, sarpo axona and a trial one.

IMG 0629
After this I was so grumpy i couldn’t bear to think before the room tidyed and hoovered, so thats what we did! and then all played happy street – which although SB growing out of, BB growing into. SB then went off to swimming lessons – which she loves.

Me and BB had a great time with an uniterrupted hour! We played with the happy street, the hammer shape sorter for a bit, some chase. SHe loved having a bang and a crash on the piano – MUST do some music with SB. With her books, she was saying boo on opening the flasp – how cute! And she has really mastered the backwards bottom/sit-on-lap thing! We then played with the little pony fuzzy felt that karen B doesn’t want to be sent on. She really enjoyed it, and concentrated for a long toddler time. We also had lots of cuddles and snuggles and general rousting about today, which was good.

IMG 0637 IMG 0635

i posted my johari, but not my nohari – motly cos so few people did it – though thankyou to those that did. 100% say I am unhappy. I am not erally sure how to sort that out either. Its like my daily emotions are over a pool of unhappiness. there are some obvious things that are getting me down, and others i blame. I’m not sure whether i am right or just labelling things. I can’t quite work out how to sort things without upsetting applecarts or potentially worsening things either. Sigh. I am hoping this is a ‘this too will pass’ thing, and as I get more confident in my role at work, and far less stressed [it is dificult to be more stressed TBH] that at least i wont carry that around with me all the time, and will then enjoy home more. Hmmmm

The Weekend

Some additions by Chris – 12.50 am

Friday was mudpud. Chris may add a bit, but it was maps and things. I think they had a good time!

Yep we had a good time, though my activity with symbols etc. didn’t get used much, but the jigsaws got done. Unusally for MP there was no gluing and sticking, which must be a first. SB did Merry’s co-ordinates thing, played with Amelie, Fran and Maddy loads with the playdough. They were making some wonderful playdough biscuits which kept increasing in price, to somethign like a zillion squillions or something. she didn’t do Tammy’s comapss making as Fran was goign to show her she said but they didn’t get around to it. so of course once in the car we had a big fuss about this

Stopped of at Tesco’s on the way home for so food, and looked for some cheap games, but nothign much left . Looked also for soem tops for SB, but unimpressed, found a couple of cheap fleece tops and a long ans short sleeved top she liked – but most were horrible – these funny things which look like you got about three layers on, with all sorts of various straps over the shoulders – and other fashionable (I suppose) sorts of styles. It’s just not the sort of thing we would like to dress SB in anyway – somehow it just doesn’t seem appropriate, and anyway, I think she’d fidn them annoying, and we’d have arms through all sorts of holes.

Bit of late to bed as SB wanted to wait up for Helen to come home, but she was home much too late (past 11pm) so once we got back She painted a card for Sam and couple of pictures. took me ages before I could convince her to have her dinner. By the time I had them both in bed it was about all I could do to flop out in a heap.

Saturday was Sam’s party. SB had a lovely time, and particularly enjoyed the snakes and lizards, though not so impressed by the spiders. She would like to see them again. would we dare do it for a mudpud friday??

She was late mostly due to me, [Chris – – they didn’t come back until about 5 minutes before my ‘very last minute to leave – SB did comment on how short the party was..] as I took a bunch of flowers to ‘homedad’ and wife [though he isn't homedad any more!] as they had had a rather unexpected and rapid homebirth! Fantastic says I – she is not quite so sure!! Anyway, baby fit and well, but diff to prise SB away. Earlier still she had looked at the new webland, and done some education city science. We also redid the Bicarb volcano experiment, this time with blue colouring

Me ‘n BB went to have a lovely afternoon with a work colleague [my boss!] and her family, and also another work colleague and wife. It was really nice. BB was a charm, pootling about and smiling at everyone. When SB arrive after Sam’s party she went straight to the park with 2 of Suzanne’s children, and they had a blast. We didn’t actually get that long at the playground as they carried on walking up to then rivertalked about locks Her princess party dress not quite what was best for the park! Indeed not it was very cold she only had socks on and no hat and gloves, but she managed ok – got hat and scarf donated by another grownup. Suzanne had cooked a lovely meal for both parents and children – so fantastic for all. Her youngest introduced SB to the concept of a happy meal, after she had misidentified nearly everything – to his complete bewilderment!

When we got back, SB and I played snakes and ladders, and I read her 3 Brittannia stories. We did skip a saints one, as she is bored of saints! [actually, they are rather saint heavy at this historical moment!]

Sunday. I had thought we would look at some snakes/lizard books, but we didn’t! Trying to get memory in order here! Failed. Anyway, we did a lot of tidying up, as the house looked like an utter bombiste. organised one of the bookshelves and the games cupboard as well. So not soooo awful!

We did some face painting. I painted SB as a piggy [her request] and she painted me as a princess [mine!] BB was forcibly painted by SB as a clown – but only red cheeks and a yellow line on forehead. Moved onto doing the coloured water/white flower science experiment. SB did some explode the code 1 – nearly at the end! i played with BB, reading her her most favourite book – thats not my monster!

Most of the afternoon was spent in the garden. We are very late getting inour fruit trees, and hope they will be ok. Anyway, clearing the bed and playing with the girls – hopefully got some nice snaps too! SB wanted to help, but the forking over was a bit difficult. when we plant should be better. Otherwise she mostly played imaginative games on the climbing frame and hide and seek [with me]. BB is very good now at that little tykes cube frame/slide. She also showed enthusiasm for getting up onto the TP one – argh! She was quite happy on the little rocking horse too. Both BB and SB played football!!!

we did some singapore maths 1A on ordinal numbers and the ‘teens’ Although SB proficient at counting in the teens, we haven’t really looked at the hundreds and tens thing for a bit, so I think this was a section that could do with some practice.

Finally SB painted her ladybird flying thingy from her party bag – rather cool Tammy! and BB, shattered by the fresh air had a long munch and a nap – bang in the wrong place for teatime etc etc. Both girls have been asleep so far, so lets hope they stay that way. Lat 2 nights BB has been in bed with us, so snack-attack city, and SB also joining us. Could do with a good night!

SO a good day al round – and I am on annual leave next week. A lot to fit in – Chris parents want him to move furniture, so a visit there. SB’s birthday money bruning a hole in her pocket – so need to shop. I would like to visit little nanny if poss. And I actually would like to have a relaxing time for some of it!!

Tears before bedtime

mine! I read SB the boudicca britannia story and cried over them dying. I obviously need a strong dose of sunshine. Or something.

before that she Joe the dragoned – tangrams and spellcatcher. We also had a look at Google Earth

SB now being all waily in the bath – perhaps my blues are catching.

She had a great day at nursery. BB is also shouting – such a rarry girl these days.

the weekend

actually, am feeling simmering at the moment, so blog should cool me down. Having spent 45 mins or so putting SB to bed, 15 mins later I spend 30 mins or so failing to put BB to bed. I just can’t bear my whole evening being taken up by getting children to sleep. [or not]. Have unceremoniously handed BB to Chris. She has – however – taken 4 oz from a bottle for me, so not all doom and gloom.

So to the weekend, lets see what I can remember? on the overtly educational, we have done explode the code – SB happy to do it, and races through the pages, so not bad. She has done loads of webland, going forwards and backwards through the ‘editions’ that we have. When we started with webland, I used to sit beside her reminding her to listen to the stories to do the games, where as now she flicks all over the place with great confidence. She also seems to remember a lot of it now. on the IT front, there was a fair bit of cbeebies as well – particularly the stories.

Seed sowing, and discussions around that. [and counting – she was particularly taken when I clumped the broad beans in multiples of 5 so I could add them up more quickly than she could count them, and I saw her later on having a go with this idea.] SB read some of the easier books to me. She is getting confident to try and sound out longer words – though not very good at blends. We have gone swimming, read a number of books – the theme has been loosely underwater/seas or the poles. So looked at the globe, a book on the poles, and her underwater jigsaw books. taking in finding nemo characters!

IMG 2787

A great hit of the weekend has been a buy from ebay – a snappit build a donkey and cart set. It was supposed to be part of her birthday present, but why not spread things out. She has put it together and taken it apart numerous times over the weekend – initially using the picture to get things right, and then just remembering.

a snappit make a model of donkey and trap - reusable

We have also done lots of drawing – and played around with chalks on dark card as well today. She has written bits to go with all her pictures – the last even spelled by herself – lov SB to Chris [asked me about the H] lots ov lov [she remembered love doesn't have an u anyway!] We have been having a chat on and off about silent letters – like w in write. She had remembered k in knee from a discussion over a month ago.

Our Jenga -alike has been used to make forts, castles and patterns, and she has spent a lot of time with the dress up flower fairies, making stories for them to act along to.

A lot of the time SB has been quite self-contained, so that I have had a lot of 1 to 1 time with BB. She is being giggly and silly at the mo – so quite a laugh! Though she does try and feed me all sorts of rubbish as we go along – plastic pigs were todays menu, and specks off the carpet – lovely! She has her lower molar on the left rhough, and the upper one is nearly though. She is always keen to play with SB, and I loved watching SB try to feed her tea. It seems that although there is quite an age difference, they do get a lot out of each others company.

No doubt I’ve missed lots of stuff out. It seems that mostly I have juggled 2 children’s needs fairly well – for a change! That we have done more educational things than I though whilst having fun. They do just slip in don’t they!

Next week we reall must take down the Christmas tree, and tidy SB’s bedroom before Barbara visits.

Oh, and I have calmed down. It is past 10, and my evening will start with Sir Robert Winston [I wonder if BB is asleep?]

Edited to add: AH, flickring and I have rememerbed what I had forgotton – my friend Katrien , who used to live in Ely with her family, popped in on Saturday, as they are moving their final things – to Belgium. Somewhere nice for us to visit one day! And I have promised SB a barge holiday one day – like angelina ballerina. She does wish she had the box set of the books…

IMG 2777

double trouble!

I still have migraine, but chris doesn’t like to be left out, so got a caustic soda burn on forearm and hand from finally unblocking the drain – full of animal fat crud -yukkety yuk. Obviously a present from previous owners! Anyway i dressed it, and it should be OK. told him if he gets compartment syndrome I get to slice open forearm – wicked gleam!!

We obviously had a rather shite night, as BB didn’t settle, and SB then joined us in bed, so a Mummy sandwich as 2 little beans had a competition on who get the closest!

So a slow start to the day. Infact, I may have to come back to the beginning – rofl! [Edited to add – SB shrugged and sid mostly Sindy’s and doing mazes] Anyway, slightly later SB cut out piccies of fruit and veg from the catalogues that she would like to grow, and stuck them on some paper for her file!! [i like self directed] She did 4 pages of exeter maths – first 2 she did some of the writing, but the second 2 she just gave the answers. this is once we got past the problem of 2 less being the same as takeaway 2. Once translated into sweetie maths she was away!

She then had a haircut – much needed! And Chris bought a tool for the drains to attatch to pressure washer. We read the Ulysses story from our usbourne greek heroes and perseus from ladybird famous legends. The ladybird one has a handy map of greece, so wee had a peek where places were – including Tiryns! I have been to lots of these places interrailing as a student, and really recommend the pelopponnese for the equally ruin addicted – and cret for that matter! mycenae was stunning. Anyway, I digress! following on from this, we jumped ahead in the story of the world to read the crete bit, as I had been talking about bull dancers. We have read the theseus story before, but SB loves them, so not unhappy to hear it again. Susan Wise Bauer doesn’t abandon Ariadne. I think part of the greek mythness of these stories is the casual dropping of women and children, and also the casual attitude towards cruelty and homily free status. BB feeding and the napping for this marathon!

After this she had a bit of a bike ride, but soon abandoned as I wouldn’t come outside with her, and instead worried over Chris, who had just had caustic soda incident. SO a smidgen of fresh air! We did a bit of recap on the piano - she had pretty much forgotten, but did find D. she enjoyed the ‘lesson’ – all of 5 mins and then pootled around again doing her own thing. I’m going at this in the ‘you want to make music, is this useful?’ Approach for now.

Sb and BB played together a bit with the shape sorters and the hammer shape toys, SB abandoning this in favour of the leap pad for a bit, until BB’s interest got too great to be distracted by Mummy reading books and playing! SB read to me a whole red nose reader – trying hard to sound the words and doing very well. She seems very keen on Maddy’s word flower thing, so maybe try that out.

She was also very good assistant at dressing Chris’s burns [made him go to the chemist!] so we had a discussion on being careful with chemicals even though they don’t look very dangerous – she could clearly see why! Also on dressings and bandages – minimal obviously! So red cross ticked too.

Whilst cooking tea she wanted to write the names of everyone who was here over Xmas, so with some spellings prompted she has done just that. Chris is supervising tea as BB a bit fretful, and if she sees me she will just want to bf. We will play a game or 2 of whatever takes her fancy before bath as well.

Re Merry’s chore thing, and we have also been gradually introducing chores – SB has to tidy her things away before lunch and tea, and if requested without a fuss, including BB’s things. She also lays the table for us. Not too onerous, but having a blank canvass after the meal frees the mind! We are also going to try and keep the main living bits tidier as a rule, so that we can actually not feel there are loads of jobs weighing us down every evening.

Mind you, I feel weighed down today, as this evening I am collecting together everything needed for a tax return, and will do it tomorrow, sigh!

A quiet day

or so it seemed, with both girls at the lower end of their volume control.

I had refound the jump ahead toddler [with hopsalot] which SB used to adore, so she must have spent at least 2 hours over the course of the day engrossed in it. It is nice and simple for her now, and she was doing it without any input and feeling very confident about the ease she did these things.

We also raced trhough 6 pages of singapore maths – again nothing we haven’t done in different forms many times, as adding to number less than 10 – can be done in head or on fingers. Good consolidation of skills, and again she felt really confident there. It involved some writing, and she gamely tried to figure out how to spell all the numbers – rofl! I did help her as she is newly interested in writing, so want her to feel equally positive about that too. She did ten on her own.

We had a brief look at DK eyewitness world atlas – she was interested in the Africa section. Its for adults though, and having not looked at it before, I couldn’t really find what i wanted to, but still a passing interest. We went on to view pretty much all the mini films!

She briefly helped Chris look at the blocked drains – yuck! An then we did the dig out the dinosaur she had got as Xmas pressie – good fun. this one was one you then joined the bones together of. of course they aren’t joining, so are glued and hoping for the best! It came with pictures of 6 dinosaurs, so as we dug it out we looked for the things that would help us identify ours. SB a bit upset ours wasn’t the tyrannosaurus!

What else? well, colouring, making up songs, singing, playing with the toys BB got for Xmas! playing with Sindy’s – the usual stuff really. lots of books – but she chose jason and the argonauts as here greek myths. Only a few minor whinges. We continued the evening games theme, with Chris and SB playing the pipe game [round the bend from elc] whilst I cooked a moroccan influenced root veg stew with couscous.

BB today has had a lot of attention due to SB self sufficiency! We have stacked and demolished cups. doen the cylinder and sphere in the shapesorters, and then tried to ram everything else through those holes! We have played with the click clack caterpillar and the noisy footsteps, chase, bouncing songs and action songs. A fair bit of chase, and sticking stuff in the mouth just as mummy lunges to remove it [sigh!] She has been most intrigued by SB on the computer – and very keen to get a look in. Was enthralled by suasage rolls [veggie] and enjoyed peeling off the puff pastry to get at the sausage. not so impressed by the amazingly bubbly bath though.

Didn’t quite manage to finish this blog in bath time, so have special dispensation [from me!] to finish with a glass of wine whilst the girls have some fruit. Jax’s fault, as she *made* me do an extra blog [rofl!] Might add to it after pondering.

Oh, and I finally managed to order the veg seed – hooray! Sb and I looked at the catalogues together.

oh and barefoot has a sale, and while the bear sleeps is 3.99 I have been so pleased with this book – it tells various winter tales and traditions from various cultures

www.flickr.com

Nice Start to 2006

I did have a lie in though – very nice!
I could hear SB playing with the Sindy/barbie dolls having a great imaginative time

When I came downstairs, SB was doing the new webland – she devours the whole thing when it arrives, so Sharks, songs, construction and I missed the other one.

She and BB bounced around a bit playing, then SB read a fair bit of an usbourne farmyard tale, with Chris filling in the more difficult words.

When BB fell asleep, we played with her wooden marble run. when we first had it, i did all the building and design, the i just built to her design. now she designs and builds whilst i troubleshoot. excellent – lets call it science. She is very anthropomorphic, with Mummy and baby marbles!!

We did 2 pages of explode the code – i sounds – and she is speeding up and more confident. we were aiming for 4, but lunch was ready.

A bit of cbeebies and jump ahead to follow – mostly stories. BB awoke and neighbours [remember homedad? now back at work] came round. they are both trained teachers, and his wife asked lots of questions re home ed. she then says she shares an office with the E something or other [EWO??] in charge of home ed. guess we are not likely to remain unknown. lots of playing with their daughter – 2ish, and SB wrote them a new years card.

After they left, SB and I looked at the usbourne book of britain - starting with the intrductory bit on how the country was shaped, and then a look at where we are. In it it was mentionig glaciers, and I could see SB hadn’t got them, so got out the Earth DK book – loads of info and then lovely pics of glaciers. i have promised to take her to one, but, disappointingly for her, not tomorrow.

I then read several back issues of disney princesses and played shape snap before dinner. We devoted afterwards to games -farmyard dominoes and don’t wake Dad. It was nice playing games together so will try and do that more regularly.

Feeding BB as I type and Chris putting SB to bed.
All in all a very nice start to the New Year.

so far so good

we have had a good day today so far.

Sb did 4 pages of explode the code 1 – 2 more than she said she was going to do. She’s getting good at it, though does have to ask me for the americanisms [pal and gas and going to bat!] Today she didn’t want me to watch her do it either, and just came when she had a query – excellent!! So whilst she was doing that, I played roll the ball and run to Mummy with BB.

I then read to her the new years eve section of the barefoot book while the bear sleeps. this has been a good buy, and has stories for various dates though the Winter calnedar for various faiths and cultures. todays was African American. We did think of making a bean soup/stew like the story, but when I found some recipes, SB decided she didn’t fancy it after all. instead, I took the leftovers of mashed potatoes and some sweetcorn and made fritters with them for lunch. With some fruit, so not as entirely unhealthy as it sounds!

Sb then did some of the story and numbers section of jump Ahead 2000 year 1 – again all on her won, with me in the room for advice. SO BB and I played click clack caterpillar , funky footprints, chase and read some of her books.

We all played Mummies and Daddies [surprise] and SB was a working mummy ballet teacher – dancing and singing galore! while BB was our baby. When they stopped for an apple, I read the first China section from story of the world which included the silkworm story. SB remembers silkworms from another barefoot book – the silk road – so we had a bit of a discussion about them and materials. we found China on the globe. SB decided I was to be a geography teacher, so we went through the lattitude, longitude, equator, seasons and day and night thing – which she seems fairly comfortable with now. Since Chris and I did the trans siberain train journey in our youth, we chatted about that, and the different ways of getting to China and how long they mght take.

Chris and Sb then fixed her tassles to her bike, and have gone off for a ride to the park. BB and I had a play and I sang some folk tunes. She is fitfully sleeping as I type, but must wake by about 3.30 at latest [will be 1 hour] so that we break the really late night crapness for my sanity sake.

Its nice to get back to a bit of normality. I keep trying to work out how I could effect change in my life so that I get to do more of this. I discussed it at some length with my clinical director, but my job doesn’t make it so easy. And I do enjoy my job, so woudln’t want to change it altogether.

I’ve also been fiddling with family tree, as inherited from cousin Anne who died this May – she had traced part of it back to 1600′s. After popping it onto genes reunited [thats your fault KatyB!] was immediately contacted by someone who had been working with Anne to trace part of it. So thats another thing i would like time for.

Ah, the cold beans are back – time to go back to my life. SB demanding hot chocolate, and Chris says she can have it if she can spell it – meanie!

edited to add that we finished the day with playdough – lots of it, pretend baking, monster making etc etc. vietnamese stew with rice for tea – so very healthy!
