There and Back Again

i did make the conference in the morning, but when the AGM started decided that that was enough, so went with Family to Glasgow Science centre instead. [science]

It is really excellent. Well reccommended to anyone! SB had a great time with the myrad of exhibits. chris and I particularly taken by a tabard that you then stuck organs onto. never made it to the top!

A bad move was to see alien adventure at the IMAX there. SB loved it, and BB seemed to be enjoying it, but I have motion sickness, and it seems that the only thing worse than being on a roller coaster is being in a 3D representation of one – so I had my eyes shut for most of it!

We finished with the Dessy Duck guide to the moon etc at the planetarium – which SB thought was the best bit. I would have enjoyed the adult one I think! Anyway, for all those going Glasgow way, we can recommend the tall ship and the science centre!

So was the day perfect?? Well no. Chris left digicam in the baby changing room. Arrghh!! Luckily it had been handed in, so he is still alive. then, after a bit of a long drive home, he reversed into the gatepost at a fair lick. Bodycoloured bumpers are a crap idea aren’t they? And ours needs replaceing – but will have to be at indeterminate point in future. Red water bill finished the day off nicely!

Actually, we did do some Exeter maths – SB used that to put me off making her go to bed! [maths], and through the journey also played alot of I spy – which at last SB getting the hang of, so can alternate that with the interminable guess that sign game! [english]

thought of the day when in doubt about work, bunk off!!!! Well, since in the end they decided not to pay me any study leave, so this was completely me funded, I had no guilt feelings in altering my priorities for the day!

Edit by Chris 00:31 SB still awake  , and quick piccie:

You have received photos from Adobe Photoshop Elements

Will sort out some photos properly, but just can’t resist this one, BB in the Imax glasses :-)

Making ourselves at home.

Up in Glasgow for a work conference for Helen, just for couple of days. We’ve all come mostly becuase BB needs her food :-). Not been to bad as the hotel is attached to the conference centre so aquick text can bring mummy running, and we can pop back in during the day easily enough. Looking around the room -we’ve certainly made ourselves at home ….:-(

The site is in the old docks area though, and not much actually around here. Me and the kids ambled around in the morning, crossed the river on a couple of bridges, nosed about a bit etc. Helen bunked off for couple of hours and we walked down to see this old sailing ship It was pretty good, SB enjoyed looking round the boat in that sort of flighty – ok what’s next 4 year old kind of way. She was keen to go when I showed her the leaflet, and enjoyed it. There was a little indoor musuem bit as well, sadly not a proepr cafe, so we had to head back to the hotel for our dinner (H had gone back to conference)

Gatecrashed the conference coffe break for BB BF, while I had coffe and cake and SB charmed (she does it so well) numerous chocloates from one of the company stands :-) popped out for a quick shop essentiaals such as beer…. – failing to find any black leggings/tracksuit bottoms etc. for SB for her Stagecoach class we’ve booked her into down in Huntingdon

Once H went off to her evening do me and SB settled down on the bed, a bit of Webland and then we watched ‘What the Acients did for us’ With Adam Hart-davis doing his thing about the Egyptians. I thought/hoped she’d drop off during it, but obviously was interested enough to watch the whole thing -though she did keep wanting to know when we would get to the pyramids :-) Once in bed though she did zonk out before the end of the story book.

After a couple more interupptions of H’s meal by SB getting the munchies I settled down to couple of hours time wasting on the ‘pute with a beer.

H back, better leave her bit of net time :-)

P*E*S*T

Just got back from the Easter visit to Helen’s Mum and Dads, had nice relaxing time, one of use will blog a bit about it at some point I guess. But one little amusing snippet:

Sitting round the table at dinner, Nanny phonically spelled out p,e,s,t in reference to E, Stringbeans and Butterbeans 18 month-ish cousin. Stringbean pipes up ‘Pest’ ! – that’s our girl :-) We were quite impressed.

Being taken for a ride – rant!

self indulgent ranting
I prob should password this, but the likelihood of someone from ex-work reading this approaches 0. After all, if they can’t read my sodding emails, they’re not going to read a blog.

I have been trying to organise a large RCT comparing the use of a graft material with none. Its all rather complex, but basically, it needs a long timespan audit/pilot study ti show material doesn’t ‘fail’. I did a 2 year audit 2 years ago, and atarted the 4 yr audit last summer. It took approx 60 hours to fill out all the ethics forms, and at 38 weeks pg, with broken foot etc I had to go and present it to the local ethics committee – all with a nominal presence only of the cheif investigator. To be fair, I always knew I was going to do pretty much all the work. She is a fantastic surgeon, but not so keen on the nitty gritty of audit. However, all i’ve actually asked of ‘the team’ is to get the remaining 40 case notes for me [i data entried the other 120 after retrieving them from the void before leaving for new job], 2 signatures, writing permission for honorary contract [so i am allowed to see said case notes], the paper and envelopes. I’ve provided time, stamps, mileage etc gratis. Oh, and I did ask if one of the 2 secretaries could do some of the photocopying. well, i got 1 of the sigs and nothing else, repeated emails and visits. last straw is that i need to pay for the paper and envelopes myself to go ahead [3 reams and 320 envelopes, as well as the 160 stamps] The lack of the second sig – which i’ve only just found out, means I cant do bloody thing yet anyway.

I guess what annoys me is that i still feel the guilty party for non-completion. I will also kick myself for stopping, as it is actually interesting, and may lead to improvement for prolapse results. However, there is no way to get this out before i move, and bugger all hope of ever getting the questionnaires forwarded onand analysed. Also the lack of help when i asked for things, but meaningless gesture offers given now to see if i can be conned into continuing. AAAARRRGH!!!

I’m not sure if they’ve actually grasped i’ve bowed out. i’ve left what i’ve done clearly organised with what needs to come next, but at lunch i was asked about the main rct design! Also some impression i’ll run about getting their posters up to glasgow whatever it takes – i think not!

family life

This unfortunately has spilled over into the rest of the day. I picked up SB from nursery. She was finishing an easter card – very nicely done, with happy easter written in it. And had done a lot of painting and letter shapes. [art, writing]

We went to gingerbread cottage to meet up with the post natal group. it was manic there as all the boys were fighting, some of the mums shouting and most looking harrassed. SB was quite upset as Z and his cousin W wouldn’t play with her at all – they were inseperable on Sun. I explained they were obviously just wanting to play together, and it wasn’t that they didn’t like her, just were in that mood. She was disconsolate, and then wouldn’t play with anyone else until the last 15 mins. sigh – and how do you deal with it? I cuddled her, agreed it was sad and gave options. [socialisation/PE]

We came home and she did some bike riding, then we made chocolate and banana muffins – yummy. I was still in mummy mode when the mixture was strewn around and an egg dropped. [baking] Although i knew i felt headachey and grumpy.

We then did studydog [english] which SB enjoying v much. She tends to do a bit much though and start to mess about. [ I'm still holding together] so we moved to cbeebies website. [IT]

However when we had the usual messing about over eating dinner i could feel myself being so intensely irritated that i had to leave the room before harridan helen took over. It took approaching an hour to eat. I just can’t bear it!

breathe helen!

house update
still not progressing, don’t know outcome of the building regs for carport thing, and waiting for the final surveys on place moving to.

breathe!!!!

Painting and being gorgeous

Being gorgeous and a bit of painting

And this is SB painting her treasure box with surprise inner volcanos!
Talking all the while!

Being gorgeous and a bit of painting

And this is BB just being gorgeous, just an excuse really for another photo post :-)

Helen

What a busy life we lead.

TBH, at the moment I can’t believe socialisation is thought of as an issue in HE. I guess whe all SB’s friends go to school it may be less manic.

Description of events
This morning we madly tidied the house as Chris’s Aunt and Uncle droppng in. SBis getting quite good at tidying up and helping, so thats def [domestic science] covered! We did some more writing her name on the thankyou letters,[writing] and then made her friend B a birthday card. [art] [B is the one on the right in the picture a few posts down, one of SB's best friends]. She drew a very creditable person, and I was impressed at how much better she is getting at representing people.

When the doorbell went, I thought it was the rellies, 2 hours early, but instead it was a friend popping by with her 2 little stars. I think I have blogged them before? Anyway, S1 slightly younger than SB, and S2 approaching 2. They get on v well, though there was a bit of a fracas over the pushchair for the dollies, and i had to do a rapid removal of felt tips!! A cup of tea and a chat and they went back to Wakefield. Got a nice photo of the 4 kids though.

Rellies arrived bang on time [while Chris blogging in fact, and I thought he was changing BB's nappy!!]. A nice natter and some late presents for the girls. SB much taken with the usbourne princess activities. We enjoyed parsnip and apple soup with crusty rolls together. Chris and SB had to leave precipitously due to B’s party. [socialisation] BB and I entertained guests till departure. I had hoped to have a bit of free-ish time, but read an article in Thurs Guardian which made me howl, so woke up BB for a cuddle!

SB returned with the obligatory party bag, and it contained a dice game. We played it together till bitter end, each having 2 counters. She didn’t try to cheat on the throws, didn’t mind going backwards, and didn’t mind that I won. She counts so well, that it was only when I read in the nursery prospectus that the early learning goal is to count to 10 that I thought anything of it. [numeracy, board games]. Anyway, this is the first time that we have played a board game as equals, so gets huge bit on blog!!

SB and I had a look at the DK world explorer, and she did seem to enjoy that one, particularly the games. She now happily says her north south east west from a get your boat to the treasure one. [geography, IT] That also works so science one only is duff. Actually she must have enjoyed it as she went back to it after her bath cos I hadn’t shut it down.

Other than that we have done a fair bit of playing, tickling etc. Not such a whiney day either. After bath, Chris gave her 2 tops to put on, so she insisted on putting a leg in each arm, and pulling up over bot [she has got small bot] When she then got the bottoms, she decided they could go on her head to keep the pretend rabbit ears warm lol!

BB is improving on the sitting front, and can sit on a squishy cushion for a bit without listing over! obviously aided by big bot and big nappies. She thinks this is hilarious! Still loving her play gym. At 17 weeks she is starting to show interest in the food we are eating – to no avail though, I intend introducing solids as near 6 months as poss!

todays summary – well, i actually felt a bit pressured by all the stuff to fit in, and would rather it wasn’t another birthday party day tomorrow! its quite late on, and the far side of Leeds, so SB will no doubt fall asleep in car on route home, and then be up half the night. Oh, I am being ungracious. It is nice for her to have such a social whirl, as she really is a v sociable girl, and thats one of the things I am desperately keen to maintain.

Renewable energy etc
my other bit of thinking has been around how to make this listed building as energy efficient as poss, and todays guardian magazine had a bit on that kind of thing. Firstly insulate roof to the hilt. chris doesn’t get on well with fibreglass, so we have been thinking of alternatives, and wool here gets a mention. Other optins are flax, or blown cellulose[treated newspaper]. SOme of the windows are secondary glazed, and some not, so it would be worth looking into that as well. I’ve also always fancied a wind generator or solar voltaic cells. Dunster of the BedZed project has a website with lowcost [relatively] products, we have alway fancied the self build, but couldn’t face it with new job, new baby etc – I know, cowardly!!. I think when we have a bit of money again, we might have a bit of a chat to the listed buildings inspector about what we could get away with! it is a shame that we can’t convert the conservatory into a full house height one though, cos I’ve always wanted one of those.

Actually a lot of grizzles, but some good HE

As I think SB is a bit run down/tired. We had fake wails and some real ones about all sorts of nothings that turned into major disasters in her mind. However, do look at gorgeous photo in post below this one!

She started the day with cbeebies, and learning how to spell her surname. I could hear her discussing it with Chris whilst i was on the big ‘puter upstairs finishing a poster for the conference in glasgow – yeah, should have been done ages ago! luckilly the lady in medical illustration didn’t insist on receiving it on a floppy with a hard copy, but agreed to email of a word doc. I told her she could lay it out however she fancied, as I’m so behind I don’t really have a right to argue!

I like a nice bit of HE in the morning
When I went down, she was keen to do some more studydog, so we started the second lot of 3 lessons, where you have to get the first letters right [english]. Now, most of this she was fine at, but every so often, would just wildly hit any old button. This annoys me as
a) She’s just not even trying, yet when I say she’s obviously had enough we have a major wail that she wants to carry on.
b) If she does it to often, she may have to repeat the lesson [to my interminable boredom] to get the clue. This wouldn’t be so bad if it was because she found it difficult, but when it is just from messing about – Aaargh.
Anyway, when this happened, we did some physical activity, had a drink or some fruit.

We also started on her thankyou letters. I have printed out a foldover with picture and a short note, and she is adding her name. We did alright until she decided she wanted to do it in swirly writing like mummy. hmmm!!!! Roll on after move, when I can put getty and dubay in a sonlight order. [writing]

We also got the DK history explorer through the post [ebay purchase 99p]. It works!!! SO obviously the patch works for that one, and the science one we have is either duff or patch resistant. We had a bit of a scoot about the mediaeval section as SB wanted to look at knights. She enjoyed collecting the stickers, and seemed to get the answers easily. however, she got bored quite quickly. this might have been due to her being tired or due lunch though, so we stopped. [history]

shopping spree [ i wish]
I thought I would quickly nip to m and s to get some birthday presents. Also got a skirt for me, a nice book on the human body for SB and a fleecy oversuit for BB. The drive home was a nightmare, stuck for 30 mins behind v smelly van due to lorry crashed on roundabout ahead. not quite so much of a nip after all.

Biker Girl/ knackered girl
As in SB, wending her way around huge paint tins on the drive on her bike mostly. I think she did do some scootering as well while I was out. [PE] We then coloured in some Maisie pictures in the book she got for her birthday [art], played shopping, and role played with her dollies.

Sent Chris out to post nursery application form and stagecoach application form, and found SB had fallen asleep on sofa in front of one of the baby einstein DVD‘s. Some hefty rousing, and we did a bit of all playing together with BB. This is where I took that gorgeous piccie of my girls! We wound things down and she read a few books with Chris, I particularly like the one of the 3 wolves and the bad pig! [literature], and following up yesterday’s surprise german with a Muzzy video [foreign language], where it does seem that some has been going in. I am encouraged enough that I will try and do it more often. Dinner, bath, supper, book [gruffalo and nativity story] and bed – ah, peace!

BB has started shrieking/screaming when either tired or hungry. When hungry, she also acts as if feeding is poisonous for the let down. Does my stress levels no good! Mostly she is still relaxed cutie, with lots of smiles and giggles. She has a really good reach and grasp She’s making some efforts in rolling over, but her big bot is a it of a handicap! Anyway, lots of wiggling, arching of back and leg scrabbling going on. Not able to sit yet either – SB could sit b 16 weeks. However, she enjoys being sat up and rolling forwards. Chris is giving her a sitting/falling workout at the moment. How much falling can they do before risk of shaken baby syndrome? I always felt SB learnt to sit as a self defence measure.

Day summary: I wish I could prevent more of SB’s whinge attacks. they are v short lived, and she doesn’t seem to hang on to them, but they do on occassiona drive me up the wall. Particularly if timed when BB also crying/shrieking. Hopefully they wont be what she remembers of childhood, but instead all the cuddles/tickles and general loving that fills the day. [we are quite a tactile family].

things to do over weekend: Must try and do some Singapore or Exeter maths [1a] this weekend though. The next few pages in the singapore earlibird 2A seem quite practical, so should be fun and easy. Will also try and pop in a bit of DK explorer when she is more alert, to see what she really makes of it. Its quite a busy weekend with 2 parties to go to. For me, I’ve got to decided whether to sort out the questionnaires i talked about yonks ago, or def forget the whole thing.
Also, Jax has prompted me to think about the DfES guidelines and make my own statement. She’s right, in that it is us at the beginning of HE who are going to be the most affected, and although we might not have got our HE styles etc sorted out, we need to keep open the freedom to do that, rather than get progressively more tied to the National Curriculum and frequent more and more intimidating visits/inspections.

Yesterday

Nipped to Huntingdon to look at house, some of the furniture the present owners want to sell, and then a nursery in the afternoon.

House Moving
Luckilly I still love the house. I say this because i have been panicking about the move and how much it is going to cost us. Wondering whether the right decision has been made to extend ourselves that far etc. In my head the decor has got worse and worse, the garden smaller, the road busier and the jobs more urgent. Looking at it made me realise theat yes, decor not really our taste, but perfectly OK, Garden is a good size though as it was such as sunny day, I could see there was a bit more shade than I’d have liked on veg patch. Jobs do need doing, but house not about to fall down. road is a bit busy, but liveable. It also struck me anew how much space there is in the house as well. SO feeling a bit reassured.

the vendors are lovely as well. i told them the absolute budget we had, and what we would like to get for it [dining room table and chairs, and superking bed] a small humming and it was agreed. We will pay by cheque after we have moved in. they have also thrown in a mantis-a-like tiller for the veg bed, a few old workbenches, bits of wood etc etc.

Cafe Pitstop – education!
At lunch in a cafe, SB impressed me by spontaneously counting up to 5 in German [foreign language] She also said Guten Morgen. So the intermittent Muzzy going OK – or is it me counting in German how many mouthfuls she needs to eat??

Nursery
in the afternoon we viewed the likely candidate for nursery. At least to start with we will send the girls to nursery 2 days a week. This is so chris can get some supply work and be know for reliability etc before reducing the days available. By next easter when SB has to stop nursery, I will hopefully have negotiated a 4 day week, and chris’s parents will be close, potentially giving him the option still of 1 def day and 1 by negotiation a week. I know it seems odd to say, when I am going to home-ed, but I feel nursery has been excellent for SB and she has blossomed there on the confidence and mixing front.

digression alert! If it were possible to easily flexischool without being bogged down by nat curriculum, and almost inevitable failure, I would be tempted by a 2 day a week for that. I can see why schools not keen to encourage that. We have a private school about 6 doors down when we move, with swimming pool etc, and I was wondering a bit further dwon the line whether some friendliness there may mean joining in for somethings? However with organising stagecoach, looking for a gym class and the local home ed community, I think it prob wont be necessary, as the problem may well be too much socialistion opportunities!

Anyway, the nursery was excellent, particularly the baby rooms for BB. No probs with nappies, breasmilk etc, lots of toys etc, a seperate sleep area, and it seemed v loving. Also set in a huge amount of garden. SB’s group has a veg patch as well. Now I know we will do it at home, but it still seems v well thought out. perhaps SB’s age seems a bit too ‘get ready for school’, but all the children seemed really happy, and they may have been spouting what they thought we wanted to hear. SB was happy as well with it. She asked about visiting BB, and there is free visiting to sibs unless they are asleep. Also, when she saw some easter card making in the 3′s room, and looked interested, she asked nicely if she could join in, and instantly the stuff was there for her to do [art]. She was happy to stay while we looked at some of the other resources. The vibe seemed really comforatble and friendly. SO its a yes.

Home and education
SB then wanted to go to a particularly good playpark in Godmanchester. Unfortunately she was asleep when we got there, and fairly unrousable, so we came home. At home [as she then stayed awake for *ever*] we tried out the studydog link provide by Sarah. We started at the beginning, even though SB beyond it, so that she would get into it. She seemed to enjoy it, so we will carry on for now. [english]

As you know, my mail annoyed me, but heavy duty playing with SB, tickling, giggling, rhyming and making up stories with the cardboard dress up fairies restored my good mood. As did a glass of red wine. Waitwotchering was ruined that day, and no weight loss so far.

At mo SB wailling [fake wails], as still not dressed, and chris and I said no more play until she started to get dressed. He has rung the solicitor on the no way jose front.

Impression of the day: very busy. SB a bit grouchy due to lack of sleep, so hard to juggle her and house sorting. Was a giggle watching her try to persuade a 70 year man to play barbies with her! [she didn't succeed, but his wife did] Underlying tension as want house sale to proceed. We haven’t done a great deal of ‘formal’ as opposed to ‘life’ HE recently, though lots of interactions where it is supported. SInce my new years resolution included not getting carried away, and playing being the key point to learn around, I guess I am keeping that one. Reading some of the other blogs makes me feel we are being a bit slack at times. but gut feeling is that we are right for SB!

the long goodbye

well 2 today. hmmm not enjoying this bit of moving.

SBand BB decided I should get up at 7.15 this am. humph. We made cards for saying good bye to the gym instructor, Diane, and the tots group aunties, particularly Aunty Carole. We also picked some daffodils and hellebores from the garden. [must remember to divide hellebores before we move to take with us] They were supposed to be of the people, I think, though Diane had turned into a dragon by the end of the drawing? Aunty Carole fared a bit better. [art]

goodbye 1
So we piled out of the house to gym, and SB had a good time, as the temp instructor the week before hadn’t done the right badge things with her, so she got a fair bit of one on one. I decided to stay and watch [and take photos] as it was the last one. I was impressed as SB knew most of the positions, could do a backwards headover heels, walk backwards along the beam, stop in the middle and turn round, and then balance on one leg, and the touch toes [which I can't do on the flat ground!] She also had to do different jumps and gallops, skip through hoops etc. The parachute and bubble machine was out at the end. BB was fascinated. Diane did say if our move was delayed, we could sneak into a lesson or 2 next term though. Does feel end of an era-ish. SB has been to gym since 18 months, and it is really well designed, getting them more confident and then learning the apparatus. She got her last badge today as well. [PE]

Goodbye 2
A quick lunch of pizza and we were off again, this time to tots group. This is at the free church, and we chose it basically cos others from y postnatal group went there. Again, we’ve been going since SB about 6 months – though with some breaks. the ‘Aunties’ made a bit of a fuss of her, and she had great fun playing with her friends, in particularly Z. He thinks she is the most wonderful thing ever as well. She made quite a cute Easter card, and sang all the songs. I know liufe would change anyway if we had stayed, ‘cos I was still going to have to be a 4 day week, and all her friends would be going to school in Sept, but I do think we would have kept up with some of them. No changing the decision though, and for all else it was the right one. [And not convinced they could have afforded to give me the job in leeds anyway, as have not advertised for anyone else to do it] Back on track, and can say it was a good day. SB growing out of tots group [obviously as it is aimed at the under schoo age]. just 2 lasts in one day a bit much. [socialisation, music]

When we got home, SB wanted to eat the choc buttons they got as a goodbye for easter break, she was only going to have them if she could read the word. Having easily told me the letters, I heavily helped her join them up into the word. Also got her to count all the buttons out before eating, and do a bit of button maths! Since then we have made curry for tea together [potato, brocolli and borlotti bean biriyani] and read a couple of books. [english]

must go back into the world again, have had a 15 min break and chris wants to have a nap before driving to Huntingdon. May have the nap myself and drive, except BB after yet another feed! At the mo, she is having a good giggle as Chris dropping her!! SB is dressing cardboard cutout fairies and ballerinas with their cutout clothes. I remember loving similar things as a child.

Doing the Space picture

today is Party Day
