sweetie science

ha ha i thought, how shall i make science invigorating, fun and accessible for all [is that being inclusive?]. I know, use sweeties!! but i get ahead of myself. we nearly didn’t make it, as BB had a complete wobble about going out. i am wondering if the family news has made her more wobbly, certainly SB has had uncharacteristic nightmares and sleep disturbance? anyway, wobble resolved and out we went. most of our journeys we are listening to salut serge in the car as both sb and bb like the catchy tunes, and bb joins in. i prob need a volume 2 for sb, but can’t see what that would be? the prob with salut serge is that most of the time at the mo i am singing these blasted catchy tunes!!!

the littlies group worked best, as it was simplified most. we made ‘mushrooms’ with proper filter paper and a wick, placed 3 different smudges of m and m colouring spaced around the centre, and then popped the wicks in the water. hey presto, it worked!! for the bigger group i had given them a proper testtube, filter maper instructions sheet, but their filter paper wasn’t so good, so the ‘affinity for paper’ was much greater than the ‘affinity for water’ but we had a good chat about what should happen, the technical words and the littlies results!! it was a bit difficult for me as bb was being v much attached by the umbilical cord! [a klingon as katy would say!], but as soon as i could give her attention, she skipped away merrily [grr] and did some beautiful sewing with merry, as did SB for their samplers. Also today was music and poetry with gina and latin and parachute games with katy. all v much enjoyed. BB did a clarinet session with gina, and is loving it and getting on nicely. must take clarinet next time we visit mum for a ‘masterclass’ – and today i got to have a good chat with the grown ups too – always nice! was really proud of SB when she sacrificed watching a film with the majority of children to go and keep the child who didn’t want to watch it company – though she said all she got to do was watch him ds, she knows a bit more about that game  but i love the sensitivity she shew there. hugs for SB!

we returned in time to get sb to brownies – i drove her to the wrong venue, she skipped in, i drove off, and one of the owls had to take her to the right place  and then took her back to judo! ah well, it will no doubt be put on my slate of parental misdeeds!! BB meanwhile was initially doing her k’nex dinosaurs she got for her birthday – she is really careful at joining these together, and v good at following the pattern – but refused to let me play :sob: nor was i allowed to play when she played with her doggies, making up stories for them about rabbitty babbity and turtle wurtle!! [v cute]

curry watching life in the freezer on SB’s return. i have still failed to sort out the personnel thingy crisis at work, coming at it from all angles tho!

monday meanderings

monday was a catching up day. both girls did a reasonable bit of formal HE. SB some end of 3B workbook1, some schofield and simms grammar, some galore park science on magnets and piano practice, and BB did some french and before the code. BB then did her rather fab birthday kit of a dinosaur puppet, which i would highly recommend. she glued and painted for ages – though not finished yet, will try and get her to finish so we can show it off!! both had some great fun ds-ing together.

Then Chris took BB to his parents for a sleepover, and I took SB to ballet for her last lesson of the term, which is an open class. She looked really happy and confident, and the next exam is june or nov, so with the occasional extra practice, hoping she will be ok this time. i think last time i managed to go was the one after her broken foot – so obviously not her best one! SB and I then had a girls night in, with her choosing tea, and then we played settlers of catan – which she is currently enjoying a lot, before bedtime stories and then chris back.

tues – well hopefully chris is going to blog his and SB’s day in london and visiting the british museum montezuma exhibition.

old haunts, new routes

it has been ages since we did an RSPB walk. the last one was cancelled due to various ailments, and the current one looked a bit iffy on the weather front. we thought we would give it a go though! we wrapped up v warm, took a flask of soup, and set off! miracle of miracles, the driving rain, biting winds and near sleet of it changed to sunshine! just in time for the manor borns to join us. it was perfect weather for a late autumn/early winter walk. the light was ‘just right’ and SB and C raced away whilst bb and i played hide and seek. its a ‘new route’ and i think we all thought it lovely. it did lead us to a previous infamous route, containing not only the most disappointing toad pond, but also the site of ‘brickie’ who is still there!! SB found some overwintering ladybirds in a fallen down tree, there were lots of mushrooms, some deer markings and just generally a lovely walk with lovely company. BB had a bit of a wail when she got her trousers wet  but, bless her, she did recover from this, and she did walk the whole walk. so both girls got an icecream [yes, it was cold!]

we repaired back to the manor for another fab meal by marcus – we hadn’t got ourselves organised enough to remember a desert. C had made some delish focaccia bread as well, and many complements gained. good food, good company and then a retreat home. lovely!

Motte and Bailey

On Friday it was another history presentation session at a local HE group.  Theme of Normans and Medieval – so just a few Centuries to choose from :-)

Decided her on the Normans.  Originally there was some idea  about SB and BB re-enacting the battle of Hastings, which might have been entertaining …. But BB decided she didn’t want to do it. So then SB decided to build a model of  a Motte and Bailey castle. Would probably have been better to have had this idea a bit sooner.

Spent much of Tuesday morning looking at Motte and Bailey castles in books and websites . And settled on a model of a small wooden one as might have been built early after the invasion.

So something like this was the idea:

IMG_8580

Made a base from two sheets of cardboard PVA-ed together:

IMG_8510

Started with a circle, cut out increasingly larger ones, stuck them down to make the base of the mound.

IMG_8557

That was mostly it for  Tuesday, IIRC the was some music practice and we had swimming lessons. Had meant to do some more afterwards, but it didn’t happen.

No time on Wednesday, so it meant we had to do the rest on Thursday. The plan had been to use paper mache to finish the mound etc.  But no time for that to dry. So I suggested using car body filler as that sets quickly.

So we marked out and cut more cardboard to make the land around the Motte and SB stuck it down.

IMG_8561

Then I mixed up some filler, and SB applied it.  Sticking a few stones in for extra effect.

IMG_8564

Had some lunch and then it was dry for painting.

IMG_8576

Which was done in time for a break and a snack before Gym class. (we went early as we had to go to the pet shop so SB could by her present for BB

So that just left the castle wall and buildings to do ;-) Luckily, soon after us getting home H arrived home as well, so we had a joint effort. H made the building shells for SB to paint and roof.

IMG_8584

IMG_8585

I got on with making palisade  fences  etc. (SB had a go, but she dislikes getting hot melt glue on her fingers).

IMG_8592

Having a break for dinner and Dr Who in the middle. It was about 10.30 pm when me and SB finished off by painting the palisade fences.

IMG_8599

And we had a castle :-)

IMG_8607

The kitchen was a disaster zone (cardboard, glue, hay, paint, dinner preps etc.), but the castle was looking cool :-) H managed to make some fairy cakes to take to the group as it was BB’s birthday

On Friday H woke BB up to give her a present of a DS game before she went to work. BB woke up said that you and fell back to sleep for another 20 minutes :-) We tootled off to the HE session. We had a retelling of a couple of Robin Hood tales,  The Black Death, SB’s castle, Structure of Feudal Society, and a bit about Stokesay Castle. Which were all very good. SB did a good presentation, about her castle, remembering to say most of the things she had wanted to say. Everyone was very impressed with the model.

IMG_8617

When we got home, SB gave BB her present –  a dog collar and lead. The collar goes round the waist by the way. B was very pleased (she likes playing being a doggy games) So they went around play doggy games until H came home and BB finally got to have the rest of her presents.

Though we had had given her rather more help than intended because of time factors , she did a lot herself with just a bit of help. Along with history, some model making techniques, there was a good chance to investigate the appropriate use of different adhesives :-)

PVA, a good strong bons, good for larger areas or where you can wait, but not much ‘grab’. UHU type glue – good grab, pretty quick drying. Hot melt, good for where you want things stuck firm quickly. But mind the fingers ;-)

It was a fun project, but a bit more time would have been better. I think SB was impressed with how much you can get done when you need to.

Dinner, more Dr Who and Birthday (bought)  cake finished off the day.

oh so tired

due to various wider family things, i have insomnia at the moment, well i am not sleeping, spending my nights torturing my imagination etc etc, so stroppier than usual. dropped a bombshell on my children about a member of my families health, and both of them not sleeping quite as well as normal, and SB had ‘an accident’ last night – first in approx 4 years! not a ‘complete’ as she realised, but i think we are under strain. so i am shouty, and v sorry about this. we are actually doing fun things as well, but i think we are all a little fragile. so…

i am hoping chris blogs, cos actually he and SB spent most of thurs constructing an absolutely fabulous motte and bailey castle whilst bb raptured over her ds, playing pictochat. if he doesn’t, i will ad a pic! [or a few!]

and then i am hoping he will say that she did a fab presentation at the not so local history group – which was v much enjoyed!

And somewhere down the line she got her BAGA 5 award at gym – i think that might have been last week! She has read a variety of fact books, and we had read the cortes and montezuma part of story of the world in advance of next weeks trip to the british museum. however, tbh, we have done v little formal home ed this week. there has been lots of out and abouting, and lots of emotional things to sort out!

and BB turned 5 – shame i had lost her sylvanian present  but i have been a bit distracted! she loved the ds from my sis, and the games from us [club penguin a bit difficult, disney princesses fine, and diego dinosaurs fine, but not that much of it!], the dinosaurs and bits and pieces from my mum. she is really a gorgeous girl, and def the girl with the curl! we are luckly that the when she is bad is usually about 10% – though seems abit 50/50 this week – sigh.

SB is being v gentle, generous and generally 100% fantastic. bless! today was judo grading, and she has missed the last 2 for a variety of reasons not in her control. we explained to her sensei who was understanding, and i think gave her a bit of leeway in her grading. it was lovely to see her really enjoying the judo [tho bb being somewhat determined to take my attention at the time also] and we are really proud of her and her new orange and white belt! so we gave her a treat of going to see fantastic mr fox. obviously we did take bb too!! [though a close thing!] i think i am just a bit emotionally stressed to be a parent today. but i think i praised sb enough for being great! we did enjoy the film, it was worth seeing, and both girls absolutely loved it. BB wants to see a christmas carol, and we have all decided to see the where the wild things are following the trailer – both girls enjoy the book [which is chris's, as he is my wild thing!]. oh, i guess we did do some french in the car on the way there and back – the fab salut serge! we have in no way done the 20 items on the list this week, but luckilly i am not worried about this! the list was for sb to see what was there, and she chose what to do, but actually they have had a v busy week of socialising, seeing friends and family and she did an amazing 12 hour shift of castle making as well! this, to me, is the joy of HE, the flexibility to organise time according to what suits the current needs of child and family. i would hate to timetable this flexibility out of existance!

SB and BB also having great fun dsing together. SB says bb having a ds has been a great present for her [aw] as they have been mario 64-ing etc. think i might need to find a mario kart as an xmas present! [bb is getting a nintendogs for her bday so they will love doing that together too] any other suggestions that things that 1 excellent reader and 1 non-reader would enjoy together? [dinosaurs a bonus!!]. The girls are , on the whole, playing beautifully together and it is really lovely to see that they have regained that rhythm, tho a bit of encouragement is still required to keep things running smoothly!

we have watched the library 2 parter in doctor who, which we both enjoyed, and generally cuddled and tickled loads and snuggled with books.

my baby is 5 – eek

how did that go so quickly! love you, oh wild one!

in praise of my family

i am going to start with 3 cheers for my dad. Despite not entirely approving of home education, he is going all guns against eh Badman report and writing to everyone possibile about it. go dad! also to my inlaws, who also completed the review.

And my sis, who i love dearly for just being here. We went and visited today and had a lovely time. we talked about lots of things, resolved lots of things, sat companionably and loved lots. mum was there too for part of the day, so felt v lovely. the kids all played beautifully together, including hysterically on mariokart, as bB is just wild, and sb kamakazi! BB got her birthday present of a ds early, and was absolutely overjoyed. further comedy moments with her arguing with brain training over the colours!

so a relaxing and connecting family day. just what the doctor ordered! we watched the doctor btw – weird wasp one!

civil disobedience – written in a hurry to MP[so prob some errors]!

Dear xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx,

i am afraid i am contacting you again about the government and their management of the home education review. As you know, I, and many other home educators, utterly dispute the majority of mr badman’s report. The statistics are unsound, and the bibliography very small and biased.

However, we are still awaiting a report from the select committee who were asked to assess this review,

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmselect/cmchilsch/uc999-ii/uc99902.htm

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmselect/cmchilsch/uc999-i/uc99902.htm

http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmselect/cmchilsch/memo/elehomed/contents.htm

and also the report on the following stake holder consultation on implementing this review
‘Home Education – registration and monitoring proposals. An eighteen week consultation with stake holders, 11 June 2009 to 19 October 2009. The Government hopes to publish a response by the end of November’
at the select committee hearing, the dcsf stated that
‘I need to say at this point that I am not able to go into very much detail about the proposals on monitoring and registration today. As you know, they are out for public consultation, which ends on 19 October. We will have to consider carefully the consultation responses before proceeding. I would like to emphasise that no firm decisions have yet been taken.’
yet they are proceeding.

I was therefore astonished to find it still in the Queens speech as a bill in hand, and horrified to find it placed within the safeguarding children part. these are children at home with their parents. unless all parents are automatically assumed guilty by the state now, this is an outrageous slur.
‘• Safeguarding the vulnerable – strengthening the powers of local authorities and others with regards to registration, inspection and intervention will mean effective systems are in place to protect those that most need it. The Bill will introduce a new home educators’ registration system and take new powers for Secretaries of State to intervene in youth offending teams that are failing and potentially putting young people and their communities at risk.’

my children are not within the most vulnerable, and do not most require protection. they are loved and cherished by their family. i cannot and will not accede to this over presumption on the governments part. I will not agree that they have authority here over my family. I would like to point out that we are very law abiding citizens, my husband is xxxxxxxxxxxx, and I am xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, so not the most likely candidates for civil disobedience. this goes too far however, and i will not agree.

there is a parliamentary group with Graham Stuart MP as chair for home education, and I would ask you to please help represent us, a minority group with so much to lose here. if you read the memorandum submitted by paula rothermel to the select committee, you will see that Mr Badman primarily wanted to see if home educating parents had munchausen by proxy, if you read that from ofsted, you will read that they recommend all home educating parents should be CRB checked before they are allowed to proceed. I am level 2 child protection trained as part of my work and, like many other professionals, highly committed to a high standard of child protection. However, I find all this astounding, child protection gone mad. there are already perfectly adequate, joined-up services which run as well as staffing levels allow for child protection in this country. forcible annual assessment of a further possible 50,000 children at an estimated cost of 34million [governments own figures] does not seem to me to be reasonable.
