I didn’t blog yesterday

as I had too traumatic a day. I have put in the latinetc logo, as it went on, but i didn’t really contribute anything at all. In fact, rather dreadfully, it made perfect childcare. Latin went on, and SB did a lot of Skoldo French. not sure what BB did at all, if anything? she was happy enough though. SB did do piano prac

me, well i went for my mammogram. the first since my sister died from breast cancer in August, a month after her 39th birthday. It is my 4th mammogram now, and still stressy and awful. the radiographers always nice enough, but… And this time worst, as i sobbed before and after, for my sister and all that she and we have lost.

A quick run back to the deependers though, as needed to take SB to her second dental appointment of the week. time for a cup of tea and chat with lecielrouge and k as we all had a hasty lunch, before taking mine away. SB I needed to rush to the dentist, but they were running late anyway, ho hum! we watched lots of things on the plasma tv, mostly of teeth becoming manky and falling out – great :) but also the trailer of dawntreader which we plan to see :) . tooth was done by v nice dentist and although not quite as good as the first one, this was far harder to do, as less of it to start with, and at least we avoided having a root canal [so far] as the stuff the exeter man put on has done the job :) . no clarinet playing, recorder or biting for at least a month, and ideally for clarinets and firm bites like apples, for 3 :( mostly due to the wobblieness of the left tooth rather than for the fillings, as he is sure she will need them replaced off and on… as he said, you can’t wrap kids in cotton wool. he has also referred to an orthodontist. i made her, BB and daddybean a dental followup in jan :)

i got home, thinking to relax, but had a phone call from work that made me stressy and nervous about today, got imminent migraine, couldn’t relax etx etc.

today girls went to tots and nots, but piano exam book in my car  and SB’s grade 1 piano exam today. so i came home at lunchtime to drop off. BB had loved the toilet roll santa chimney craft. After lunch a stressy aft at work, but moving on… SB enjoyed her piano exam, but the ‘trudging’ piece went ‘bananas’ which basically means totally awful. so who knows if she will pass, but she did it, enjoyed it and worked hard for it.

Oh, and she got a bronze certificate for her primary maths challenge, which pleased her, and will try for a silver next year :)

christmas is upon us

Well nearly. i kind of feel like i am standing on the walls at Helms Deep watching christmas rolling towards me. Christmas has never seemed like something to dread before, not to this extent. Last year was hard, the first year without Little Nanny, who made the essence of christmas in our family, it was hard to sing carols without sobbing, hard to make and bake, and yet… the carrying on was important. it was hard that my sister was choosing to spend what was likely to be her last christmas abroad with nuclear family at disneyland. Hard, but we cheered too, for the importance that that holiday would have. this year, well, it is just hard. At least last year it was at mum and dad’s, so a venue change, but back here this year. i could have said mum and dad, but this way chris’s parents get to join in and be a welcome part of the family too. But this year, Little Nanny still won’t be here, but oh the gaping hole of not having my sister :( . it is just like an open wound to the heart really. I know i am being a bit drama queen like, and that i will get through it, and make it fun for the children and i will enjoy parts too, just like last year, but it all comes at a cost :( and i know that it hurts hundredfold for my parents.

But we have got started with christmas, and today the christmas tree in the living room went up, with moans that i have all the best baubles [say 'yes I do' in a voice like Nic] that is because mine are bought with real money, and all the ones we make with love go on their tree in the playroom. I told them it is good to have 2 different looking trees. mine is a look no touch, and theirs is a play with and love a lot, with a different charm. Neither really bought this. it doesn’t have enough lights [ yet another light crisis, as 41/2 out of 6 chains of lights now don’t work  i did get a lovely blue glass bauble from the marble place as a christmas present [early] thankyou lecielrouge for being entirely unsubtle about the hinting :) . Looks good though, and still room for more baubles :) nearer xmas will place vases of holly in here too, so will look good :)

The girls were given a box of toffifees this year rather than an advent calendar, and since they haven’t seen their other grandparents either, bemoaned this massively. so today, SB decided she was going to make an advent calendar to put hers in, and so made the box for it, decorated and all done. BB was not to be outdone, and we made an alternative style using the tray the toffifees came on – honestly, they are done as if you were going to make a calendar from them :) SO that took quite some time, but the results are great, and we are going to put in the christmas crafts page up top.

SB had a dentists visit with daddybean whilst i was working – he has built up the left [better] tooth with what looks like white filling stuff – it was set with uv, and it looks good. she can feel the bump where it joins, and it is noticeable when teeth smeared with something, but otherwise an excellent match. he says it may break periodically and need doing, and when teeth fully grown can have veneers. the right one is going to be more tricky, and he is going to take off the temp cap on wed, and the decide whether to do something involving a root canal if nerve a prob. i need to ask him a few more questions, and just want to hug her loads, as she has been v v brave XXX

the girls and daddy also cleaned out both rabbit hutches, and the rabbits have played in the conservatory. Skittles and snowy are grad not chasing so much, and i think sedna also settling, tho whether that will last… not heard anything more from snowy owl.

The girls did a bit more crafting, mostly a colour in hanging dec from yellow moon. had been trying to tempt them into stained glass, but they do like doing something that has come from a kit! BB was persuaded, but then instead of a patterned stained glass, went for a father christmas design which i had to make and cut out, by which point she put on one bit of coloured celophane and ran off. harrumph!! hoping she will do some more :)

bit of shrieking and tidying, as the general mess has got on top of me, and with all the other stuff, i don’t have much margins of sanity. A warm fire, chippery tea and merlin. nice to have shower without everything going dark [motion sensors at hostel :) ]

Poor BB seems to have lost her voice and appetite, but at least not seeming quite so listless, so hoping she improves.

SO, there we are. big day at work tomorrow [girds loins] and then mammo and dentist wed [keeps loins girded] and then a stiff drink :)

When your hands are too snowy, just do the dance…..

more of the same

I am afraid, that with SB wobbly over shattered teeth, BB wobbly over camp virus, me wobbly over shattered teeth, camp virus and Xmas wthout my sister [not sure exactly how to bear it] and back to work, we did more of the same today :)

The yellow moon bauble painting craft has been v successful, the playing with rabbits v successful, and film of the day was spiderwick chronicles, which I hadn’t seen before, and did enjoy. SB did a good piano prc, but v waily and despondent at how bad you get with a week away – hugs. plan to do pract with her mon and wed, exam on thurs. with prac also sightreading [a bit hit and miss, but mostly ok] and aurals [not her best thing due to lack of pitching first note, but hey ho].

Daddybean bought Xmas tree, and with a bit of a reshuffle, it is in the sitting room, lights a prob, so will check them tonight and put on and the ribbons, and most fragile baubles, and the girls can decorate more tomorrow. Need to give sitting room a really good tidy and clean, and then keep it and conservatory in that state till xmas.

next week busy, dentist monday, latinetc and mammogram [big eek] wed, piano exam thurs, new carpet fitted friday on top of the usual things adding much stress. then hope can breathe!!

crafting for christmas

one of the things we do when we are blue is craft :) today, with BB lurgified and SB still desolate from her tooth injury and pain, we needed distraction. The grls watched star wars and daddybean and I sorted out the conservatory and gave it a clean, then I found the rabbits and popped them in the conservatory to get used to each other again. I also popped in some xmas crafts, and we were off…

these are some yellow moon plastic come apart decs, so we have painted them with glass paints, and they are looking good, and now debating what to put inside them for xmas. Both took a lot of care and attention over them, whilst being dosed with calpol and nurofen with soup and angel delight for lunch :) . We love our conservatory [grin] and crafting, cuddling and stroking rabbits was what our poor bruised and battered selves required from today. Hoping for another gentle crafting day tomorrow, and tidy of living room so that can put a christmas tree in it to decorate :)

Christmas Camp 2010 :)

we are back from a fab week at Christmas Camp. One of the surprising joys of home education for me has been the finding of firm friends via the internet, who crossed over from imaginary to real friends by the home ed camps. These were initially Muddlepuddle camps at Melrose and Kessingland open to allcomers, but the Nic Christmas camps are friends only and we are happy to be on the invite list :) . This year we were in Okehampton and it was snowy :)

We went down via mum and dad’s, said farewell to some of our baby bunnies – Olive, Tweedledum and Hamster. Tweedledum and Hamster being a last minute rehoming :) I hope they are all settling in well. The girls were rather devastated to be losing the babies, as they were hoping to keep them all – but I am v happy knowing that they have happy homes to go to. :) . I stayed up late chatting to mum and doing family hugs.

SO an easy drive down to Okehampton, third there, just pipped there by kirsty and co :) and we were sorted. Hugs, hoorays and beginning the dinner. we ran bets on the order of arrivals, and we were mostly right. Nice to see everyone in real life and give and receive hugs and benedictions :) . jacket potatoes cooked – amazing for a youth hostel – and eaten in convivial style and game on for holiday :)
we played games and drank mulled wine [diet coke mostly for me], ate cake and caught up. Children raced around like loons and also caught up :) . Actually SB mostly spent the evening with Kirsty’s A – which isn’t the most common exclusive pairing – and they made some really fab christmas cards for everyone between them, and were really lovely with the drawing and sharing.

So most of the week we only saw the girls at meal times and bedtimes, tho we both periodically wandered to see what they were up to and make sure happy. They always were and seemed to have had a fab time. Nice to see BB with her own posse of friends – J, R, J in partic. SB was far more fluid with who she spent time with. Both played many games tho with many friends and had a fab time with no fallouts and flounces [that made it to my ears :) ]. SB has said that she missed C and B, both in france on en famille trips, and is looking forwards to seeing them again.

So what did we grown ups do then?? well, a reasonably large amount of kitchen and catering – i enjoy cooking for a group, so this is no hardship, partic when giggling with the other kitchen krew. We played board games, ate cake, drank tea, ministered to each others worries, prepared activities and gossiped. I didn’t get to play music with Em – due to migraine :( I begin to think hostels have a something or other that triggers migraine, as cleared as i was driving home – and i was v stressed then! but we did spend an evening writing out carol music and teasing each other, which was v pleasant. i didn’t get to see my friend Shaula either, as snow stopped play :(

communal things were common tho :) Monday we had a geocache walk with our girls, lecielrouge family and a number of friends. I felt fairly honoured that I got to take out ‘wherethedaysgo’ F as well. Failed to find the first one, and I had to return with the youngest walkers and the coldest walkers – The others found the second geocache, and then found the first one on the way back. It was a beautiful day tho for the walk, bright and crisp and even. Looking forward to seeing our pics [daddybean is in charge of those, as much more brutal with the final cut] In the eve we had the birthday parties. A and J were near enough 40, BB at 6 and S at 8. 17 cakes on a table to celebrate that [photo to add of course :) ] and they were fairly swiftly polished off in order of chocolateyness. BB was ecstatic with the cake, the general singing, and particularly the fab presents :) ppl seem to just know what i like – she said – big grin :) . I was v pleased J and A liked there presents too, and they had seemed to work. Their fav pics of kids on large canvas bought with love from all of us [and a little bit of panic!] Camp Curry night, which went really smoothly, except the hostel had a distinct lack of big saucepans, so we did 3 rounds of 5 small saucepans.

Tuesday was a camp historyetc, predominantly on phoenicians, but with added plague of frogs :) we tiedyed canvas purple – as they developed purple dye from snails. we used red cabbage tho :) . we made bracelets out of ‘glass’ beads, as they also developed glass. We made tanit charms from fimo – isn’t fimo fab :) and also made a plague of frogs from paper plates – and it did look like a plague by the end. we didn’t get to the peg dolls, and we didn’t get to do geologyetc either, but loads of kids did some of it, and loads did all, so chalking it up as a success :) . I didn’t get to go geocaching in the aft, having persuaded ever so many other ppl to go, as BB decided to stay in and make more [and more] frogs, but daddybean went out and all seemed to be great fun. gallons of hot choc drank on everyone’s return tho. Stew night, which was delish, and Z and I did some v genteel dumpling throwing, then wrapped the veggie stew up well whilst the chaotic and crazy meat dumpling throwing went on

Weds was the Pennywell Nativity. We did this 5 years ago, and SB was spectacularly sick on the way, so we took a longer but straighter route this time :) Arrived in good time to eat packed lunch in FREEZING barn. the kids looked at the animals, and I sat by the only source of heat :) lots of ppl migrated towards it. it was almost like being by one of those bins on a picket line. the nativity was great, SB was the angel gabriel and BB sat with me. I loved that SB asked 2 diff staff members why she couldn’t have been able to say the words, as they weren’t difficult. SHe didn’t get much of an answer :) i was told several times i did a beautiful descant – giggle! not the only one tho. I think the HE parents much more of a rousing joining in crowd than school teachers and parent helpers. Lovely :) Father xmas was slightly ditzy doling out pressies, but both girls happy. I was v much bemused by the reindeer head singing country – odd!! We went home via marble place, bought some marbles, looked at the history, watched the demonstration, and pressed as many buttons as poss for the fab marble runs :) . unfortunately on way home migraine started to be pretty awful, so didn’t help with dinner, and instead had short nap. SB loved doing the bells with E in this time, and BB played with J in our room with their new lorries. E and I then wrote out our carol extravaganza, making them all in G, with tune, cello, easy violin, easy recorder and clarinet parts. 6 carols in total. took us ages [and then the next morning, realised gone wrong with transposing for clarinet so redid 3 of them]. finally set about gaming, but ended game when spilled the coffee – at least all over our game rather than someone elses :( . v late night.

Thurs unfortunately for me, migraine no better. SB rehearsing a play for most of the morning, BB watching films and being a bit under the weather. Lots of cuddling required. Daddybean in the kitchen for this meal, I just helped with plating out. this was the grand christmas dinner, and delicious it was too :) particularly the nut roast. lots of chatting and noise and cheer. We unwrapped secret santas, and were all v happy with those that we received, and the recipients of ours seemed to be happy too – always a relief :) .There was a play by the children, which had much more of a plot than last year, and we all enjoyed watching, then the christmas carols, sung and played with gusto and occasional correct notes :) admirably held by E as conductor and encourager. finally a grad shift of children to bed and initial tidy and pack ready for the morning.

i am unkeen to blog friday :( as it all went disastrously wrong for us, with SB slipping and breaking both her front teeth, and will poss need to lose one of them and have the other rebuilt.  i feel so bad about it, she is trying to be so brave and it was so scary for her and is still v painful. deep breaths. But i do want to say a BIG thankyou to KIRSTY for asking for a classicfm request for us as we drove home <3 x x x

in true oscar fashion, would also like to thank Nic and Ady our hosts, and our other friends that made another memorable holiday.

It’s Just Not Fair

I will do a christmas camp blog, but am going to start with a ranty waily blog to get it out of the way. My SB is a lovely, gentle, darling girl, who cares deeply about her family and friends and really should be a friday child for her loving and giving nature. It is so unfair that such a gentle soul should get so hurt :( . I wish I could protect her from all hurts, and feel a bit of a failure that I can’t.

My lovely girl was having fun with friends at the end of a week camp, and slipped over, landed on her face and shattered her 2 front [adult] teeth. V v painful, partic as one tooth shattered in 2 places. ALl I could do was hug her and assure her that at some point it would be fixed. :(

After lots of frantic phone calls we managed to get an appointment at a walk in dentists, and the lovely man there coated the pulp and then fluorided the teeth. He thinks one should be ok to build up in the future, but much less confident about the one that went through the nerve, so she may end up losing that tooth. sob for all her pain, and the worry.

Resources Post – Maths

this is just a really short post, because we are so happy with the maths that we use, that we have very few books of maths :)

As usual, please add in the comments any books you would recommend too.

edited to add – whilst writing this blog, i realised that was a fib! we have only one regular maths series we use, but loads of maths *books* :)

Singapore Maths – my Pals Are Here
we have used singapore maths right from the earlibird series [preK] we were influenced by sonlight, reading around, and a lot of mathsy literate people suggesting it was a very good way of learning and understanding maths, rather than just learning to answer. SB has always enjoyed it, so there was no pressure to try something else. She is halfway through the 4th level, and BB on 1A

Other ones
our nearest contestant for maths came along later – Maths Enhancement Programme [previously called Exeter maths] this is also highly rather by my mathsy friends, and when we have done a few of the sheets, SB has been happy. but she prefers her singapore, and we are happy with it too. If starting again, i might have looked at bit more closely at it.
Miquon. We did buy a couple of books of this, and really, we didn’t ‘get’ it. it just didn’t sing to me or SB, so it sits dusty on a shelf, waiting for me to have a resources bring and buy at our house – which i plan to do next spring.
I would like to perhaps get one of the practical applications maths books that several friends have, to see if that would be a fun maths to do

Fun additionals

we enjoy looking at some experiments in carol vorderman’s book – when we remember! and would like to remember that more. We have had some pattern books and cuisinaire rod books which have been quite enjoyable. Both girls have some taking out and about cheapy workbooks picked up when reduced to near nothing :) they like these.
we also use – occassionally! – mathletics

maths based stories.

I seem to have more maths resources than i thought  and there I was thinking this would be one of my more minimal blogs!! We love reading in this family, snuggling on sofa together, or curled up individually so having some maths story books is not a surprise! We started with the Sir Cumference series – rather excellent – and branched out. SB enjoys partic Penrose and the mathematical cat. BB likes the ant ones…

girls went to pizza express today on HE visit and made and ate pizza, a birthday cake then brought out, and a £400 bill! luckilly when explained, pizza express ppl didn’t charge after all. person who had agreed the HE visit had left, so new person thought a mega birthday party! they enjoyed it

pm, SB did some maths, galore park english, piano and NVR, made some fab carrots to go on SB’s birthday cake at oakhampton. piano prac and gym

BB read a book, did some music theory and did some oranges to go on the choc orange cake and a rabbit face to go on the carrot cake – v fab :) also gym

when i got home from work, i made choc orange cake and carrot cake – house smells fab :) also did loads of reports for work :(

in the afternoon, skittles got 15 mins in the hutch with snowy and babies. think we are prob going to end up keeping the other 3 [eek!] so are wondering whether they might all rub along if poss. if not, would try the 2 lads in one hutch and the other girl with skittles and snowy, and then hope for a home together for the lads in the future, as they are gorgeous :) . it went all right. no fighting, a bit of chasing, as skittles exerting a bit of dominance, so snowy unsettled, and babies uncertain though came over to sniff skittles and be close, but not a bad first try. [no 'adult' behaviour observed ;) ]
